    rear window exploded!!

Iv'e never heard of this before:

My dad has a 1999 Passat. He was driving down the highway and his back window just exploded. Nothing was thrown or shot at it. Does anyone know what could have caused this??

I've heard of windows exploding when you get into a car on an extremely cold day and turn on the rear defroster before the interior is sufficiently warmed up...

i've seen it happen on my friends and sisters car..

only reason i could think of is that it might have had a small nic on the glass + thermal shock/in cabin pressure = shatterd glass..

Air pressure can be a powerful thing.

I think you would notice if the cabin pressure became that strong...Not that i think it could.

he was talking about Air pressure...not cabin pressure....

did the window explode, or implode... i just dont see where air pressure comes from

High (relative) pressure inside, low pressure outside, boom.

air pressure as in the outside air pressure.....that would be my guess...

i dont think it had anything to do with that, personally, i think the window had a fault somewhere and gave out....the air pressure on the window while the car is in motion (on the highway nonetheless) is pretty strong, so if it had a fault somewhere im sure it wouldnt take much for it to cave in...or blow out if he closed his drivers window after smoking a cigg or something....

ok... gotcha, there will be a realtivly low pressure zone on the back window/trunk area. i just never would have thought the pressure difference would be great enough to do that

EDIT: i belive it would be harder for it to cave in due to its curved nature, but i also agree with above, something stressed the glass enough to allow that pressure to cause catistrophic failure
