What does it mean when they say your car is burning rich, this does not sound like a good thing, my muffler shop told me this because my cat is different colors

Running rich means the air/fuel mixture has too much fuel and not enough air. Stoicometric (ideal mixture) is 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel, so 12:1 ratio would be rich and 16:1 would be lean. Someone PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is correct.Originally posted by Junior Smurff

Correct heres a little article on it. http://autospeed.drive.com.au/cms/article.html?&A=1595 mr_adrenalin714 if your o2 sensor or cat isn't working correctly your car may be letting unburned fuel out through the exhaust. also the cat can get plugged with debris after a while and hinder performance along with making you fail a smog test. i have seen a few cars start on fire because of a clogged cat. check your o2 sensor out while you are working on the exhaust, from the experience i've had with my car the o2 sensor goes out first then the cat fails.Originally posted by 4GAccordH22Retired 1990 Accord LX Coupe
