ANY BUYING/SELLING IN THIS FORUM WILL RESULT IN AN INSTANT BAN!

Read the rules: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=43956

Myself, and the other mods have been very nice and lenient with the rules. We have been deleting threads, and giving out warnings. Some members didn't get the clue and re-posted over and over... Now ANY member buying or selling in this section will be banned... No IF's AND's or BUT's.

These are the rules. Read them. Live by them.

1) Absolutely NO flaming! "Flaming" is an outright attack on a member. ALL questions are encouraged to be asked here, no matter how basic. Members with over 30 posts will be subject to a ONE WEEK ban if caught flaming in this forum (and yes, moderators can read deleted posts). Members with under 30 posts will be subject to a ONE DAY ban.

2) Use appropriate language. Racial or sexual slurs will not be tolerated. A ban will be issued at the discretion of the cb7tuner.com staff.

3) No items may be sold in the Beginner forums. Any "for sale" threads will be deleted.

4) Temporarily banned members will be PERMANTLY banned if they are found posting on another account.

Question on tapping a coolant housing

ok i want to install a coolant temp. sensor gauge on my car and i want to know if it would be ok to tap the sensor on the upper coolant housing because i am afraid that the housing might be too thin and it might crack. Has anyone ever tap the housing before because i have search and found nothing. Any info would be very greatful

I wouldn't tap the housing for the temp sender, I would instead tap the block coolant drain plug on the back of the motor for your 1/8" NPT sender.

I have posted before on the topic, you can find the info here: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=126481

Well you have to tap somewhere for 1/8" NPT, why not a block drain plug, it has the advantage of reading the temperature of the coolant running in the block also, so you have two different points of reference. Main reason I installed the aftermarket gauge was because I wanted a guage that has numbers over the factory. You can always install the aftermarket sender into the factory location, but then you lose your dash gauge. Whatever route you do go, I wish you good luck, and post up pictures of everything when your done.

why cant you just tap into the signal? All it is doing is reading a voltage from the coolant sensor.

I just tee'd off of the temp sensor at the thermostat housing. Now I have an aftermarket gauge as well as the stock gauge working at the same time. It was simple.

Remove the stock temp sensor, get a tee fitting, thread it into the housing, then put the 2 temp sensor probes in the tee

I removed the temp sensor on the thermostat housing. Got a copper tee, threaded it where the temp sensor was, then put the stock sensor back in, as well as my aftermarket sensor. This way I have 2 sensors, just to be on the safe side

so u have 2 sensors and two guages?

sorry but whats the purpose of this...?

Yes, I have 2 sensors and 2 gauges. The purpose is: the stock gauge doesn't show an actual temp reading, just if it gets too hot or is still cold. The aftermarket gauge tells me what temp my car is running at, helps me monitor the temp of my engine a little better

So the thermostat housing would be the most accurate place to put the sensor at right and do u have a picture of ur work and also how did u find these parts.....did u need to retap anything.....please give me more detail please

I just went to Schuck's and told them what I needed. I didn't have to alter anything in any way. This way if I decide to take my gauge pod out, everything will go back to how it was stock. I don't have any pics at the moment, but, I can take some for you tomorrow when it's light outside.

Dont over think this. A quick and easy way to do this would be to use an adapter. They come in different sizes and are made for temp sensors.
