    Can't recover HD files!

Ok so about a few weeks ago, my computer geek dad not being able to turn of the computer, unplugged it. It caused Windows XP to die. Everytime I would reboot, it would start loading Windows but then a blue screen would appear. I tried to boot into safe mode and other modes but nothing worked. I couldn't format the HD because it has a lot of files I need to backup. I actually have 2 HD installed and both contain files I nee to backup. I couldn't just repair Windows because I didn't have a bootable version of it. I had to burrow one of my friend's HD to install a fresh copy of windows on it and hopefully by Windows and the other HDs plugged too, I could access the files. Usually this would work just fine but now neither of the HDs can be accesses! They both show in My Computer but none of them is accessible. How is that!? I had so many family pictures on them, pictures from Australia and just many things I would be pissed to lose! What else could I try?

Leave the good hard drive plugged in, remove the other 2, then, set the jumper setting to either slave or cable select, rehook it up, perhaps there is something on the mother board causing a glitch? or, try a new ribbon cable? just a few ideas

are you talking to me? i asked if he could see folders on the hard drives, not just the drive letters themselves... it could be anything from the master/slave setting on the hard drives as mentioned (if they are ide) to security settings on the folders and files...

Oh so boom thats the problem...Had the same with my laptop. You need to get a copy of either a genuine XP cd or a bootleg one online w/ serial. Pop it in and select R for repair. you dont want to reformat. but usually same problem occurs again and again so you need to quickly save your data and do a fresh purge and reformat.

I cannot see the files or folders. I see the Hard Drive which means they are registering, they both have their original label but when I double click any of them, it takes a while before it tells me it cannot be accessed. I don't remember the exact error but it has to do with I/O.

The new one is Windows XP Pro SP3 I believe... The other one used to be Windows XP Pro SP1

I tried all that already and like I said, both hard drives are registering. It is therefore not a cable or jumper problem. Besides, the new HD uses the same cable and it works just fine.

I have Windows XP DVD that isn't bootable. The way I usually do it is that I delete all NTFS drives with a boot disk with FDISK and then create new FAT32 partitions on which I install Windowx 98 to then simply install XP over it.

Repairing is I assume my last resort if it even works. I don't even see why I can't access the drives in the first place. I was convinced this would work but it doesn't with neither of the hard drives. It's just weird. I will be so pissed if all the files are gone or damaged which I wouldn't understand either.

Well somehow the boot up files are corrupt. So it wont boot. Mine used to always make it to the loading screen and then cut out. I put in the Windows Xp CD, started the computer and selected R for repair. Just make sure you don't reformat and you should be fine. get all your files saved then mess with it.

x2 on this. If you have two other hard drives and the one that has the new installed xp on it try different configurations with the other two. Try using one as a slave and unplug the other one, try the same with your other hard disk. Try using cable select mode as well.

Many times hard drives that won't read right work under different circumstances.

It's really not likely BOTH drives in your pc because corrupt from that.

Have you tried viewing them from the My Computer icon? Kind of like, if you had a picture link on a website, such as this one, then you deleted it from the hosting site, the link would be broken. Does that make sense?
I don't think I follow. I see the drives in My Computer but cannot access them. They both have a letter assigned and a name that was previously chosen. As for the "link" you're talking about... I don't think it makes much sense

When you upload a file to a hosting site, it stays there permanently unless you or they delete it. The picture that was originally on your computer remains there as long as you don't delete it. My guess is that I cannot access the drives because of a different operating system. By that I mean a different service pack. Who knows what errors these craps can cause. It is indeed unlikely that files on both of my hard drives got corrupted. It isn't a jumper thing either. I tried everything already. If the hard drives register when you boot up, it's all good and there's nothing much you can do. Really there's only repairing I can try with my original CD that I have given to someone!

That message was confusing. My apologies. I was just using the photo thing as a reference. Like, I have posted pictures on this site, well, I was going to delete it from Photobucket, it said that if I did, it'd create a broken link where ever it's been used.

And as far as like sp1, sp2, sp3, I don't know if that has anything to do with the base of the operating system its self, I think it's just new security patches and shit.

Blah! don't listen to my rambling, cuz, at the moment, that's all I'm doing
