My weekend project, custom LED sidemarkers utilizing the OE molding and 5mm water-clear LEDs. The idea was for a functional/additional indicator that is invisible when not lit. I also did not want to punch big holes in my upper fender. Each side consists of an 8 led array wired with a resistor in line for the voltage drop. I am very happy with the finished product.....
I originally removed the molding clips from behind, just pop the inner-fender clips and reach in with some needle nose pliers. The key is to take your time drilling the holes, mark them out on some masking tape layed over the molding. Use a ruler, I think my LEDs are 7mm apart on-center. Then, center punch (press) the marks so your bit doesn't wander. LEDs should be snug when you drop them in. Solder them up, and seal-em' with silicone.
I wired them in parallel with the front parking lamps, (on my amber corners) this way they are on when the lights are on, but they blink with the lights on or off.
Be sure to look out for them when washing the car, as they do protrude a bit. But, you never have to worry about peeps not seeing you again....as they are very bright!!
Just use the LED Series/Parallel array wizard to determine the resistors for your specific application.
Parts total: $10.00 (leds and resistors off of eBay)
