    broke lower bolt on thermostat

    hey guys small prob here......

i havent found a new forum to join with my 95 ex yet and knowing that our cars are very similar, how do i remove a broken bolt on the lower part of the thermostat?

    i overtightned the bottom and.....snap!!!
its enough to see but not enough to get a good hold with a set of vice-grips.

any answers? ill get pics up tonight.

    thanks

You snap the head of the bolt im guessin? They have kits to take out stuck bolts like that. I forgot what they were called but yea.

You need an easy out/extractor kit. Sears has them

Yea CpMike posted about this a few weeks ago.

Its a set of tools that have "teeth" and it digs into the metal and pulls the bolt out.

          that sucks jay.

          two ideas:

if just the head is stripped or part of the stud is still sticking out enough, you can use these, like ralphie mentioned they are reverse-bladed sockets that as you loosen, they grip tighter. they come in various sizes, youll need to look around to see if you can find one thatll fit. it helps if you bring a matching bolt to the store with you.

or if its broken off flush inside of something, you will need to drill a pilot hole through the shaft of the bolt and use one of these (exact inverse of the above)

i have tried both methods (have both kits) and used them with much success. but i prefer the first socket-style, you dont need to drill, and works great on bolts with stripped heads

You can use the methods mentioned above or you can go grab yourself either a set of flutes or a set of left hand drill bits.

With flutes, you drill a pilot hole, hammer the correct size into the drilled hole, and use a wrench to turn the flutes.

Or with the left hand drill bits, you still drill a hole down the center of the bolt, but theres a possibility that you will catch the bolt and it will drive itself out.

wrose comes worse you can just take the entire housing out and replce it if you dont want to go through the extraction and everything.
