    Reusing a torqued head gasket

i put my head on the other day, only to JUST find out that i forgot the dowel pins.

i will NOT run the car without the dowel pins, so i need to pull it back off...

i sprayed a layer of copper sealant on both sides before i torqued the head down onto the new OEM gasket.

its never seen pressure, only torqued down once... can i reuse the gasket? id use the sealant again.

        hmmm

        $140 : 8 ex valves
        $90 : installation
        $15 : few seals
        $110 : 2 headgaskets :
        $20 : 2 new rocker arms
        -----
        $375

sucks, but good thing i had to pull it apart or i wouldnt have caught the rocker arms before they caused other damage.

machine shop. they grind the valve seats/valves, measure/grind stem length, and vacuum test it to make sure its sealed perfectly. for $90, i dont have the time or tools to attempt that.

I had the same question awhile ago with a cometic head gasket, I had assembled and tore down the motor about five times while checking piston to valve clearance. I emailed them and they said that I should be fine to use it as long as it hadn't been ran.

EXACTLY, and thats the ONLY reason whats hindering me from doing BIGGER jobs!

                      TOOLS....

                      needed:

                      valve spring compressor

                      ridge reamer

Brake Cylinder Honer ( not cheap )

tap and die bits ( set )

                      hub puller

                      piston ring tool ( remove/install )

NOTE: theres other tools needed I just can't think of them right off...but yeah...without the tools you need ( knowing how to use em ) you can't do the job! resulting in Paying a shop to do it! ( space needed as well )

and money dont grow on trees... BILLS suck!

you dont need the super duper special valve spring compressor, just a simple 50 dollar one.

that, with basic tools is more than you would need rebuild a head.

ridge reamer / spring compressor / taps & dies are hand tools that arent hard to get... i was more referring to the precision machining equipment lol. and why would i need a hub puller and piston ring compressor to do valves?
