New Oil=Brownish and smooth.
Later.
This is not valid indication of oil life and performance.
Have you ever seen diesel oil after 30 seconds of it in a running engine?WTB - IACV for H22a4.

Sorry, but no you can't tell by the color.
This goes for almostJDM as well. If you aren't sure if you oil is holding up at 2.5-3k miles, have an oil analysis done. This is the ONLY way to know for sure if your oil is exhausted.
Color means very little.WTB - IACV for H22a4.

Are you looking at the oil on the dipstick? Your oil is sludgey on it?
I have never smelled burnt oil either. Perhaps excessive fuel, but not burnt.
Smell would hold more weight over sight, but not much.
I haven't done an OCI on either of my current vehicles(CB9 and '04 Tundra Double cab) yet. Why don't I practice what I preach? Because I haven't seen a need to yet. I have no problems running extended OCIs. I run the Tundra 1year or 15k miles on an OCI. On the CB9, I plan on running 15k OCIs. That puts me at 2 changes a year. I keep very meticulous data of my vehicles. My logs can help me determine when something might be going bad.
Oil analysis data can tell you if you air filter is bad, you are running lean/rich among other information.
My CB9 operating manual even says to change oil at 7500 miles and they are assuming dino oil with that statement.
If you change earlier, you are wasting money and resources.

Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 SM I got on sale at Home Depot, plus a quart of Shell Rotella T syn 5w40. Change it when the maintenance "light" turns red.
