    Fuel Filter

Was wandering if anyone had any advice/suggestions for a DIY fuel filter change? I had it done by a mechanic when i bought the car about a year (and 20K miles) ago...i know its location, i just wanted to know if anyone could supply any helpful hints/tips. Any are greatly appreciated.

you need a pair of wrenches... use one wrench on the fitting, but youll notice if you try to loosen it, itll just bend the fuel filter mount. you need a second wrench on the hex-shaped fitting thats fixed to the fuel filter, so you can hold it still. each fitting has a hex shaped spot to hold it steady. once you release both fittings, its easier to replace than a vacuum line.

Do i face any kinds of significant fuel loss, etc.? I know I have to be careful with the lines, but once I get the filter off is there anything I should know to prevent leaking of any kind? I don't wanna get the filter off and leave a hose hanging only be leaking fuel...I guess what I'm asking is, do I have to use/take any precautions as far as clamping/cutting any lines off so as to prevent leaking?

the filter and lines both have fuel in them, but it isnt really pressurized enough to go spraying everywhere or anything. of course youll leak some fuel, but just keep a rag handy and it wont be a big deal. just dont tip the old filter over, or itll drain out

once the new one is in, dont immediately try to start the car. turn the key to ignition, but dont crank it... wait 3 seconds, turn it off. repeat 1 or 2 more times, THEN start it. doing this lets the fuel pump fill up the new filter before trying to run the motor, otherwise youll be cranking it over for a while waiting for fuel to get to the injectors.

And I believe you have to relieve the fuel lines right? Something like when you remove your gas cap and you hear that hissing sound? I'm planning to remove my intake manifold to clean it out, (IAC valve, egr ports, throttle body, etc.) and I Think you have to relieve it.

I've heard horror stories of it getting jammed on. I remember Cass telling me she couldn't get hers off. Any ways to combat that?

Mine's at least 40K old (eek). Where is it btw (I'm such a n00b)

oh man i don't think mine has been changed for the life of my car, I'm at 132k miles. I have the previous maintenance records and none indicate a fuel filter change.

Ok..just outta curiosity, for someone who's never done this kind of project, how would you rate it? Is it one of those things that, since it's such a vital component to the running of the car, that it should be left to mechs?

*EDIT* I'm doing it cuz i know its one of those things that should be changed every 3, 5, 10 or 20K miles and my car hasnt been starting like it used to and i thought this could be the first of many reasons why. It may be something else, but i figured "what the heck" might as well DIY and either fix the prob or at least gain the know-how on how to do it for later changes.

Yeah, I don't know if mine's been done and I'm trying to just catch up on everything. I've had my car 40K and I've changed thigns here and there, but the fuel filter, not so much...and my car hestitates all silly now, so I'm going to take a look at that.

I'll have to bust out the Haynes tonight to see where it's located.

its one of the simpler things you can replace on the car. do it, dont even let the idea of bringing it to a mechanic go anywhere near crossing your mind.

ive never relieved the lines, but it cant hurt. open the gas cap. but then again, i never usually hear hissing when i take the cap off of my car, but have on others.

mike, its the black metal can to the right of the black emissions box, on the firewall. has 2 lines running to it.

pick up a haynes manual from autozone, it explains how to do it with pictures.

the fittings get more and more stuck the older it is, but spray PB Blaster and use a pair of wrenches and itll come out.

I should get/have a haynes manual anyway i know a guy thats a mech and he's a good friend(wouldnt screw me/overprice me) and he showed me where it is, just not how to change it...I'm just one of those people that if he'll show me how to do it w/o charging me for it, then i killed 2 birds with 1 stone: i get it changed and dont have to worry about fucking it up myself + I now know how to do it when it comes time again. But I wanna learn to do it on my own..but i dont have that quote in my sig for nothing...oh well, here goes.

The heavy thats weighing in my mind is that this is a vital function for the car..if i screw this up, i wouldnt even know where to begin on how to fix it. Thank god i dont have to worry about going to work til tomorrow night but still...as long as i can get it off w/o screwing anything up, i think i'll be fine. cuz once its off, its reverse for install so..
