I'm doing a tune-up...everything was going well, changed the dizzy and rotor w/o incident...got the 5/8" deep socket to remove the spark plugs; the furthermost one from the dizzy came out w/o incident, but the last one is being stubborn. How do I get it out? Can I use a magnet?

use a plug wire, pop it on and pull it out.
or lay a paper towel over the end of the socket and use one of the removed plugs to push the paper towel into the end of the socket, thatll make it a little more snug when trying to pull the other one out.
you can also use a piece of rubber hose and pop it onto the tip of the plug and pull it out that way.
does the plug socket that youre using have the rubber ring on the inside so it holds onto the plug when youre pulling it out?

oh jeez...I thought it was seized in the block
Well that's not so bad...ya know, I never thought to just stick the boot on the plug and pull it out. I say go with that. you can use a piece of small hose that is tight on the end of the spark plug and big enough to shove inside the socket if your rubber grommet inside the spark plug socket is gone or you're just using a thin walled normal socket.........

Like I said...I used what was basically a hanger (it was a shishkebab stick with a loop...just bent it, perfection). Using the plug wires came to mind, but with the plugs being loose it's impossible to get the end over the tip.
I think I'm gonna have to go back in and change some seals though...oil light came on in a turn

Thats the best way to put the spark plugs back into the head... put the end in an extra fuel line, that way you can thread it in the first few turns so you cant cross thread and f' yourself. Its much easier to get off aswell since the socket usually wants to stay with the plug when its tightened down.

Most of plug wrenches have a rubber o-ring in the socket to grab the plug (as do some better spark plag sockets). I've never had one leave a plug in the well yet.I swear, eventually I'll run out of things to break.
I guess I was wrong... I broke it all. Died 10/29/06

Using the plug wires ALWAYS works. Sometimes you need to fiddle for a second or two because the plug terminal is leaning against the side of the tube, but it always works and is extremely easy.
EDIT: Plug wires = perfect useful tool already attached to the car so you never have to go get it. Can't beat that.Last edited by Dirty Harry; 04-06-2006, 01:54 PM.
