    timing job parts

    what all do i need for a timing job

    i no.
    timing kit ($65 ebay) brought
    valve cover gasket kit ($17) brought
    water pump ($?) deciding

    any thing else i need?

    whats included in the timing kit? you need both the timing belt and the balance shaft belt.

    i would also recomment a front countershaft seal retainer bracket from the dealer - go and ask them about it, they will know. it was a recall item.

    and "deciding" on the water pump? absolutely definately replace it while youre there, its worth the money.

    besides those things listed, theres really not much else in that area thats replaceable, unless you plan on going through and replacing the seals, like front main and cam seals... which is usually skipped by most people.

      kit comes wit both belts and tensioners, how much is the water pump i c one on ebay for like $45 new

            im being charged 150 for the job i paying for all the parts which come to like

            65+6+50+17= fuck u do the math is this a good price

            pep boys want 500 and i no my total now is less then 300

              Minimal to do a proper timing belt job:

              - water pump
              - timing belt
              - balancer shaft belt
              - balancer shaft seal retainer (if you do not have it already)
              - tensioner springs (qty: 2)


              Additional parts that I personally would do while I'm there:

              - front balancer shaft seal
              - front crank seal
              - front camshaft seal >> a little more work, but worth it
              - lower spark plug tube O-rings
              - valve cover gasket kit
              - oil pan gasket

                4 things u have listed are $138, plus 150 for labor, $288... which is a great price for a full timing belt job...

                  Since I might be doing this soon as well, I have a question to add to this thread. Some kits come with the balance shaft and timing belt tensioners and some don't. Do I really need to replace those? I don't know if it was done on the last job but I doubt it.

                    Make sure you are prepared to pony up the cash for the tensioners if need be. Depending on mileage, they may need replaced.

                    My experience has shown them to last between 180-200K. If you are anywhere near that number, be ready.

                    They should roll perfectly smoothly, albeit with a slight amount of "drag." If there is any amount of "notchyness" or play whatsoever, I would replace them. Cheap insurance.

                    It would definitely be wise to put the front balance shaft seal retainer on there. Cheap insurance. Just like the waterpump. What good does it do to change the belts if the pump fails 15K later? If the pump fails completely, there is an extremely good chance it will take the belts and the engine with it.

                    If the balance belt tensioner is bad, you may elect to just leave the balance belt off. All you do is slide the balance belt tensioner back onto the mounting stud to act as a spacer when you tighten the tension nut. It will save the cash of having to buy a new one, and will even free a few HP in the process. There will be slightly more vibration at idle and on acceleration, but not enough to worry about. There also doesn't seem to be any long term reliability effects.

                        Just like what Scott & Cisco said. Do the whole lot in one hit. Doesn't matter if it needs it or not.
                        CYA (Cover Your Arse) Insurance is the cheapest insurance you can get, not to mention peace of mind knowing all's OK in there.

                          Everyone is forgetting the cam seal here! Replace the cam seal, they always leak like hell, so replace it while you're there.

                          Also, sorry but I have to say it....only use OEM parts!!!

                            I didn't forget Corey I contemplated putting it down, but I was like....how many on here will take the time to do this because it's a little more work....I personally would though. Heck, both my projects getting fully sealed up front, back, top and bottom.

                              Just to add, when you have replaced everything and are adjusting the T/BELT Tension, DO NOT tension it up too tight, as you will get an awful humming sound from the Belt. It's not good for the new Water Pump or the T/BELT, Tensioner & Pulley's.
                              A General Rule of Thumb I go by is to tension it up so the T/BELT can be twisted at least 90* with your fingers without much effort. More than 90* will be too loose. Less is too tight.
