o2 heater is part of the 02 sensor it comes on the burn off build up in the cat by superheating the exquast gases it hard to explain but basiclly it heats the exquast gases up to the point the it burns the build up in the cat thats why they smell some times after some bad gas or lots of stop and go driving

Unheated Thimble: This was the first oxygen sensor design and Bosch has been producing them since 1976. These sensors either have one wire or two (for purposes of grounding), since they do not require power for a heater element. never said it wasnt for emissions in fact it has everthing to do with emissions how else is the cat going to continue to trap and filter out the unburned fuel particals and hydrocarbons by use of the o2sensor/heater to ignite the build up in the cat why do you think it gets as hot as it does not just for reading a/f ratios but to burn the shit out same effect as blowing on coals on a fire to promote burning ie the 600+degrees that it get hot and the motor pushing the air like blowing right in to the cat

and you obviously have no idea how a catalytic convertor works. it doesnt collect buildup and rely on the heated O2 sensor to flash burn all of the buildup. the materials that make it up aid in converting the exhaust gasses into less toxic chemicals. it doesnt "trap" or "filter out" shit. its a CATALYST that CONVERTS exhaust gasses, otherwise it would be called an "EXHAUST FILTER"
