    Distributor Timing issue

    Hello,

I'm having timing issues with my dizzy/coil. Yes, I've changed plugs, wires, timing belt, and yes I'm positive the timing is correct. My Old dizzy went out and now that I have my new one in I can't seem to find the sweet spot where my car doesn't chug when accelerating. When I had the old dizzy on, I didn't have this issue at all. I've researched within the forums on dizzy timing, and have tried what others have done to fix their issues, but it doesn't seem to fix mine. I know every car is different, and I try what I can to narrow the problem down. Can someone please give me a tip what I can do to get this error of mine corrected?

    Thank you!

is the "new" dizzy actually used? how do the cap and rotor look?

if it is a used distributor, i would question the Ignitor unit inside. it may be flaking out, which often shows up as a misfire when revving, which you hardly notice but mainly just feel a bogging when you get on it.

you can test an ignitor with a multimeter, but sometimes it is easier to test by just swapping it out with another, if you have one on hand.

Actually yes it's used. It was one from my accord that got totaled. I pulled it off the motor that I have sitting at my friends shop. Now with the multimeter where do I need to touch and what am I looking for to tell if it's bad, and thank you Mike for responding.

You actually said the problem in the title of your post, that is the "Timing"

You replaced the distributor and it went out of its correct "Timing".

Go get the car tuned (particularly the timing) at a shop if you do not have the knowledge or the tools required.

If you don't know how then I suggest search using the search bar or google or buy a manual to understand how a distributor affect the engine timing and how it can be adjusted.

I don't believe you don't have any fault it is just an adjustment issue.

        Hint:

Multimeter is not the tool to use to adjust the timing.

I just decided to buy a new dizzy, I'm going to rent or buy a timing light. I would take it to a shop, but I want to learn this stuff myself. I'm just trying to figure out what procedures I need to do to get this thing in time. Like I said I know my crank and cam are in sync, I made sure of that when I put the belt on.

Also why I bought a new dizzy is because since this one was used from the past from a car I only had less than a year with a blown head I fixed from previous owners. I don't know what kind abuse it's gone through. From the sounds of the person who resurfaced my head said the cam wasn't in good shape, so I can't really rely on this dizzy, not knowing what it's condition is. All I know is that it works but not how I want it to.

Okay my car is still bogging, I thought it was my new wires being faulty. Before I get started again, to refresh what happened. My Old Dizzy went out, and now the damn car wont time worth a crap with all the new stuff added. Now when I used my timing light on my fly wheel showing the timing, I can see the mark but it shows it way off time. It doesn't matter if I advance the distributor all the way it wont reach the marks. I have redone my timing 3 times on the belt now, and I know for fact it's in time. The car will drive fine until it warms up. Once it's warmed up, the car has bad hesitation from 1000-3000 RPMs, even with the pedal slammed to the floor. After 3000, it takes off like a champ.

Also to note my 3 cylinder closest to the distributor has a black plug like it's be missing. Could Injectors have anything to do with this problem. I haven't replaced them yet.

            I've tried:
            Unplugged O2 - New
            Unplugged EGR/Cleaned
            Cleaned IVAC
            Cleaned Throttle Body/Changed out
            Checked Spark Plugs/re-gapped
3 Cans of Seafoam in gas
            Clean Intake
            Changed ECU
            Reset ECU for Timing

If I can think of anything else for this list I will add later.

Check your IAT sensor and your MAP.

I know this may seem like a dumb question, but did you have the timing light on the correct plug? I have had them switched them before.

also are you adjusting your timing with the car fully warmed up and the service connector shorted?

I haven't checked that sensor actually. I honestly didn't think it would cause problems, I will try that. The timing light should be on Cylinder 1 wire right, the one next to the cam gear?

Yes the car is fully warmed up when I checked the timing.

Okay, I'm posting results. I've unplugged the IAT sensor and that's seemed to clear my bogging up significantly. I am going to replace my IAT and see if it continues after getting the new one. Thank you SonikAccord I wouldn't of thought of that sensor causing problems. Once I get the new sensor I'll post more results for anyone who is having similar issues.
