Broken valve, sending the retainer into the alum cover with engine detonation.

EDIT: Added photo so others can see the mayhem without leaving CB7Tuner.com ...

Wow. I've never seen that before!

Is this true? Should I look at changing my valves anytime soon as I approach 250k miles?

My engine has 515000 miles on it. I've never had any engine work done to it. However I am about to change the head but I think I only have leaky valve seals but with that many miles on it a new head won't hurt.

That quote is for high revving motorcycles. The blown valve cover was from a person trying to force the car to start after the damage was already done. As long as you don't spray starting fluid into a cylinder with a blown exhaust valve and force an ignition you shouldn't have a similar problem.

              Yikes!

Also a defective PCV system could potenetially allow enough blow-by gasses to collect within the engine block and/or valve cover area. If they are flammable enough and there is a source of ignition.. then boom.

I think it's got a hole on the #4 piston in the beginning. Then, the starter fluid finished it.

                  so...

ground straps were missing off a spark plug

                  used a vacuum

                  and starting fluid

                  think that'll fix it?

Looks like they stuck a pipe bomb under the valve cover
