crank pulley bolt removal issues

Long story short, I was retiming my engine b/c I was off by a tooth and went to go put it all back together and tightened it w/ my 1/2" air impact.

I cranked the engine manually w/ a breaker bar to check to see if everything lined up and stupidly forgot to take off the breakerbar off the crank pulley bolt before I went to start it.

I think its tightened like a mofo right now....I can't seem to break it free w/ my IR2131 impact at all now.

Any ideas how to get it free?

You may want to invest in that special tool that goes into the pulley itself and then taking your breaker bar and puttin a gorirra grip on it.

well tomorrow i'll try going to sears and buying the strongest 1/2" impact they have, take the bolt out and return it.

I really must've tightened the hell outta it if my IR impact can't get it out...that thing has like 500 ft-lbs of torque

that shits 500 dollars! I can't afford that lol. Well I doubt my compressor would run it very well.

I'll get a 3/4" 750 ft-lbs ones and blast it off and then return it...I doubt I'd ever have to do it again my IR impact is pretty stout but not stout enough, it was just one of those careless accidents

Did this once before, the ratchet stopped the engine dead. Didnt torque the bolt any more than it was

Too bad these cars arent Kias where you can put a breaker bar on the bolt and hit the starter a few times.

i use a nitrocat 1/2 1200k which actually claims to have 1200 ft/lbs of break loose force and i have no reason to doubt it as of yet....has gotten every bolt off....its only like 170 on amazon

OK, went to sears bought their pretty high grade Craftsman 1/2" impact w/ 710 ft-lbs and that didn't budge it at all.

I put it on w/ my IR impact and now I can't take the sucker off...the only other option I have is to go to work and use their 1" impact used for big box trucks....but I'm worried that now this bolt might snap when using that much torque

I was going to comment about needing a huge impact but it sounded like the guy got it. I've done a lot with the 1" guns, just do it quick.

IDK but my Snap On XT7100 says it has 700ftlbs and it popped it off right away, maybe you don't have enough air flow or PSI to the gun, just an idea?

GOT IT OFF! I had to go to Midas and use their air lines. They said they had like 600psi or something....WAY more than my 90psi 22gal tank. I even used my own IR gun on their lines and it blasted it right off.

So its not the gun that was the limiting factor, it was the air...just didn't have enough of it.

well at least its taken care of now, such a relief. I drove the car there w/o the timing covers and P/S pump and the car ran beautifully after the timing was corrected from being a tooth off.

I just gotta clean up some P/S fluid b/c it kinda overflowed out the reservoir driving it w/ no pump.

So when in doubt, get more air!

when in doubt, get more leverage! the holder tool i believe is $35 on amazon, and itll work over and over (EVERY time, even if youre on the side of the road miles away from air)... almost a necessity for working on hondas

yeah i had one of those Powerbuilt tools I bought from Amazon, got it for 25 bucks shipped a couple years ago, but my thinking was when I bought my air setup last August, it came with a good quality gun that I thought would blast anything off. So I sold it on my local AZHT.net forum to some guy for 30 bucks lol

Well not 600psi, just for warranty issues you have never had the gun over 90psi, but in my garage we ran the psi @ 120, I'm sure a lot of shops do the same.

I have found that when the air gun wont remove the bolt right away I hit the end of the bolt with a hammer a couple times. The shock through the bolt always helps is come right out.
