    starter wire caught fire

the starter wire boot that went over the starter terminals caught fire today but i cant determine what caused the initial spark.

the wires are hella old and the starter is from the junkyard so both conditions are poor.

0.5mm Oversized Stainless valves and bronze guides available. Pm me please.

I'd be more inclined to look for a thermal cause. I've seen jumper cables melt the insulation right off of the copper, but I've never seen a spark catch the rubber on fire. with everything being old, it's possible that the resistance just caused enough heat to burn it up. How long have you been using it?

loose connections can do that. arcing and what not. Loose Wiring that is chaffed thru and grounds on metal anywhere can also do that

i first relocated the battery to the back and had current issues with my positive wire so i pulled the stock battery cables off a high mileage car. the wires and terminals were covered in battery acid.

nothing was loose, i couldnt pull anything off until i actually yanked the wires from the terminal and it stopped the fire.

im just worried that replacing the starter and wires, it may happen again.

yea, it was the way i mounted the starter wire. one part of the connector was literally a mm away from the body of starter. im going to put a washer under the new starter wire and heatshrink the connector all the way to the hole of connection.

id say poor contact which would of course produce immediate heat.. why its always important to make sure you have good solid wire and connections are clean, which of course you know..... right?? lol fire in an engine bay = scary shit
