My light first comes on at about an eigth of a tank (on the gauge anyway) then it goes off for a while and comes back on. I made the mistake of misjudging it a few months back, luckily, I had just backed into my space at home and shut it off. I didn't realize it was out of gas, but the next time I went out to drive it it wouldn't start. I checked out a few other things before I thought about the gas being empty.

the fuel pump sucks from the bottom of the tank anyway, plus, there is almost always NO sediment and "crap" floating around in your tank. and the tank stays mixed from normal driving.

Honda says the tanks are 17 gallons. I'd trust them.
When I drove the car 100 miles a day on the highway for work I'd get around 32mpg according to my math. That was right about 450 miles per fill up of around 14 gallons. The gas light would just begin to show up at that point. I've put as much as 15.5 gallons in the car before, so I know it's larger than 13 or 14 gallons.

So 13+4=
(hint:4 gallon reserve)

It's a hangover from the old days. I've been driving for almost 25 years now. Back in the old days, crap did build up in the tank and settle to the bottom. Better safe than sorry. Stuff does get in there, that's why you have a screen on the pick up and a filter in between tank and injectors.

the tanks are all 17gal, but there are other variables. The level sending units and the fuel pumps are not all placed the same either. My 90 accord would run until there was less than 1 gallon left in the tanks while the 91 will starve with 4-5 gallons left.1990 accord Honda-Challenge, H22 powered
