Reusing head bolts?

My Haynes and Chiltons manual both mention nothing about reusing/not reusing factory head bolts. Are they Torque-To-Yield, and is it safe to reuse them on a stock head replacement?

I wouldnt recommend it. Probably could get some ARP head bolts and you will be good to go. Or OEM ones would be just as good if you dont plan on any forced induction mods.

Its is not recommended to ever use them twice. I have always bought new ones. They arent that expensive and will save you headache in the long run if the used one fail for any reason. Just my $.02.

yeah, I'm in the same predicament now. I may just go OEM head studs though because on ebay, the h23 head studs are going for $160 shipped. My pockets don't really go that deep. I wonder how the OEM studs are for pricing

I got some ARP headstuds for 135 locally brand new for the H23

I've done it twice for two people without replacing the bolts. They just wanted their car to go from a to b so they didn't care. No problems so far but if it that was my car I would definetly replace em.

The head bolts are TTY. You could use them again for a stock rebuild if you're on a tight budget. The protocol at my local honda shop is 15% over stock torque if they reuse a TTY bolt.

For the cost of new head bolts though, just replace them. If you run an f22, f23, or h23 they all use the same head and main bolts. The f23 bolts are about half the cost though... I think I bought a set of f23 head bolts for about $25

i was going to say, OEM headbolts are surprisingly inexpensive. ive reused them without problems, but if i was doing this for my own car (i used ARP) but wanted to stay on a budget i would absolutely replace them.

I've used them 3 times on my old f22.

It's the one that brought me across the country and kept up with h22's.

despite what everyone says, I've never seen a stock head lift off with re-used head bolts. I've done it before and never had a problem.

Its recommended to get new ones but for a stock engine with stock power levels I dont think if you reuse them it will matter or not.

This may help, and I believe you are the one that suggested H23 headstuds lol. And they take a 12pt 14mm deep socket to put them on. But I may be selling mine pretty soon, depending on if I'm going to part out my F22A6 engine or not.....gotta make up the cost of the H22 somehow right?
