    Transmission Rebuilding Saga

My goodness....so I went to rebuild my 5 speed, H2A5 trannie. Went and bought the synchros and bearings from a local trans shop. Took out the trans and benched it. Got it apart, cleaned everything, reassembled the shafts with new synchronizers and everything....it all benched out beautifully. Then I go to pressing my countershaft bearing in and broke the bell housing out behind it.

Moral of the story: don't press the bearings....I learned that they are tap-fit.

Just thought I'd share that with ya'll so if your every in the same situation you don't suffer that.

Of course, none of my local junkyards having anything available and it's $350 used. So I took it to a welder and he's going to try and weld it back together...hopefully he can. We'll see.

Anyways, just thought I'd share. But hopefully it works.

Can't wait to have my baby back though. It's all cleaned out by the trannie....put a few finishing touches on my P/S delete. It's gunna be nice being able to shift without grinding. Never have had that. But that's what you get for having a 240,xxx mile car.

    So don't be like me!

The upside is I'll probably be the only CB in the universe with that welded!

Really? I think I can hook that up...it'll take me a little longer and I'm without a car but I can try!

On second thought the best way to do this is by the Honda book, and a DIY would take forever, but if you buy the service manual, they have details on everything and there are a million little details that would take forever to write down. There's a good reason it hasn't been done.

So I can the bellhousing back from the welder yesterday ($51). I'll put up pic's later cuz I want proof I'm the only CB in the world with this welded. But anyways, I go to put the countershaft bearing in and it doesn't fit. So I talked to my dad and turns out I didn't account for the fact that the aluminum probably shrunk during the welding. I damaged that bearing beyond use, so I have to go buy another bearing and remove some aluminum from the bearing holder before I get my car back.

very nice. did you take any pics along the way?

and yes doign the tranny is so specific that id have to agree that the honda manual is the only way to go.

id like to try this someday.

It's not very hard...as long as your decently mechnically inclined (obviously you are Mike). Clean everything! And pay attention to all the details. They all matter. I did take some pictures, they'll be up soon! I needed to rebuild cuz I had bad synchros and was getting tired of grind on every 2nd and 4th gear shift.

don't even bother with a DIY, people don't search anymore
Good luck with the build though.

Yea I know! It's too complex anyways, I would spend days writing down every little detail and still miss a whole bunch. Not to scare anyone, but its pretty complex and there are a thousand ways to mess it up!

                    Yup, we'll see.
Once funding comes in I may start tuning a little, since I've stayed mostly in the appearance and suspension end of things. Thinking about a cam and and AFC to straighen it out, balance shaft delete and exhaust/intake/injectors.

Yea thanks dude! I didn't weld that, but I had it done at Gem Welding and Fab. Amazing guys over there! Course, that only matters to Seattle-ites. But yea, don't press the bearings.

Okay so everythings straightened out. I got a new bearing after breaking the case, installed it all and the transmission wouldn't go into gear. Turns out after removing and reinstalling three more times that I bent the clutch disk on the first removal, so it was dragging and engaging the transmission. Sucks. But got a new disk in the clutch, and put it back together, worked like a charm.

So I bombed about 100 miles last night. Shifts like a new baby, and I swear its more powerful, because every corner I take now my tires chirp. Never did that before but now it does.

just curious how much was the damage($$$)? I was going to rebuild my transmission when my synchros and fifth blew, but I just did an lsd swap instead with another used tranny. M2B4 trannies are hard to find
