I love how everyone says "sea foam" the crap out of it... It is not magic in a can!

For a motor like that it should really come apart. Atleast pull some mains off and inspect the bearings. It may never have had an oil change.
If you plan on keeping the car do it now instead of pulling it back out sooner rather then later.

      Exactly.

In this case, Mike, just teardown.

Take the whole damn thing apart and clean it piece-by-piece.

If neither you nor your friend have the time/money for it...Id go with what HondaFan81 said. Just do your best to clean up what you can. Replace everything, or what you can and hope a good system flush helps solve the rest.

And x3 on "where'd ya get it?"

Oh..and uh...run some Shell Gasoline through it when you're finished.

        Guaranteed to stop/slow engine sludge

Having dealt with tons of sludged audi's here's what we do per audi guidlines on any sluged 1.8T engine

1- pull valve cover and remove cam caps and inspect for wear on the caps and cam.
2- If none found then removed oil pan and replaced oil pickup.
3- replace ALL crancase ventillation system pcv etc. components.
4- Then we use this BG brand stuff called dynamic engine cleaner. it has an
an adaptor that screws onto the oilfilter mount. We then fill it up with 5 quarts
of this bg engine cleaner that smells like a combo of oil and drano. We run that in
at 3500 rpm for 20 minutes.
5-Drain and fill the crankcase and change filter. Run engine for 15 minutes at 3500 rpm
Drain and fill oil again and change filter again.

We do this at least once a week. once i was curious how well it worked and removed a valve cover after doing it and it had removed ALL the sludge from the motor. It was back to its normal yellowish oil stained look.

This engine could have damage from oil starvation. Definately tear down, thoroughly clean and inspect.

Woohoo 500 posts and it only took me 5 years LOL.

              Anyways..

Just removing the cam caps will generally tell whether or not the motor is damaged. No need for a teardown unless those are showing oil starvation.

mike thats some shit. no water or brake clean. let it drip off top and bottom. get at much of it as u can. get a shop vacuum. slap the motor together pour at least 3 quarts of tranny fluid in there and let it drain. tranny fluid has detergants. The reason why that happen was lack of oil changes.

Has there been any attempt at contacting the seller of this sludge-o-rama? If it's a reputable place I would think they'd do something, maybe even swap the head w/a clean one. Then again, I think the good places to buy from check for this kinda stuff before they move it on to the next guy.

lol i have seen that before on f22a b and on a usdm h22...

basically that engine has had lots of sludge before then it had a head gasket problem.... if the problem has been fixed, who ever did it didn't bother to clean up the engine.....

in all cleaning product out there kerosene is the best against sludge/oil etc etc..

you are fine washing the head with water.... use some kerosene too if you can.

after putting everything together, when putting oil just put 4quarts of oil and half of quart with kerosene. run the engine. let it warm up. drive for 5 min or so if you can.
then change the oil while the engine is warm.. drive for a day. change the oil again. drive for a week. change the oil. then drive for 2k miles then change the oil again.

i have done this on my white ex engine. and on my friends usdm h22....

both engines are still running as strong as they could....

ps. if u use kerosene then you have to change all the rubber seals that you can. lol
are we there yet are we there yet are we there yet

thank you so much for all of the input guys.

im sorry i havent responded sooner, but ive been busy this past week and didnt get a chance to sit down and think about the issue and respond here.

so having read over all of your suggestions and showing larry and getting some input, i think i know the method of attack...

im going to completely disassemble the head, and larrys going to run all of the parts through his parts washer. we already have a bag of the majority of new seals, but with how far im going to have to pull this apart, theres still more to get. ive never officially pulled apart a bottom end, but i feel confident enough to at least check the bearings and see what might need to be done. im going to dig into every nook and cranny and clean out whatever i can.

once i get it all cleaned up, im going to reassemble and check as much as i can. im making him get an oil pressure gauge and ill be checking everything that i possibly can to make sure this thing starts up well :\

granted i dont know what im going to run into until i start digging into it more, but ill take it piece by piece until its all set. ill be keeping up with this thread for sure, and youll all be kept up with my progress...

oh oops i forgot to mention where it came from.

came from JDM Engine Depot in Kearny NJ. ive dealt with a number of engines and trannies from them, all seemed to be pretty good... nothing along these lines ever... so idk what happened this time.

startup warranty. they claim sludge is common in some used engines, and offered to flush it for us, and that we should just clean the majority and run it with cleaner / frequent oil changes in the beginning.

typical business response, we are pretty much on our own with this thing.

Did you try to start it? I might have done that and when it didn't start, ask for a refund or replacement.
