    h22a auto tensioner

    hi guys , im about to change the timing belts on my h22 motor but how do i hold the tensioner in place ? do i need a speacial tool ? cos if i just unbolt it im going to need a need one .help me out here please

    yes you need the special tool, its a bracket that fits over the tensioner and holds the piston in... i got one from the dealership, they come on all new auto tensioners, they should probably have extra brackets laying around...

        You can also use the weird bolt that sticks out with a cotter pin in it.

        1) With the belt still on the car, use an open end wrench to break it free (it shouldn't be very tight.

        2) HAND loosen it just until it stops.

        3) this will lock the tensioner arm in place, so that when you remove the belt, the auto tensioner will not be able to extend.

        4) Installation is the reverse of removal, but the belt will be tricky to get on.

        Honda has a little tool that you stick on the end of the exhaust cam gear. It is like a rounded ramp that allows you to slide the belt back onto the exhaust cam. It goes on the intake cam easily.

        Alternate method #1.

        1) Remove the timing belt

        2) Remove the tensioner.

        3) Loosen the bolt on the bottom, and use a vice to recompress the tensioner.

        4) Get the braket like cp said, and lock the tensioner down with the bracket.

        5) Reinstall, and pull the bracket out.

        6) The tensioner will do the rest.

        I have used both, and they worked fine.

        I personally don't like to reuse auto tensioners, so if I were to pull it off, I would just replace it with a new one.

        Cheap insurance IMO.

          wow, good post scott... i always wondered what the hell that cotter pinned bolt was for!! thatll come in handy. i also didnt realize they made a belt shoehorn, i need to get one of them...

            chuckle .. it took me a while to figure out what the cotter pin was for , smart move i thought . i attempt trying to make the bracket to hold the tensioner but not engough metal .. grrr., ''good thinking batmang (cpmike ) !!!'' i'l go to the dealer ship and borrow the little bracket , it never cross my mine .thanks for all the info this webstie is 'one in a million ' nuff props to ya'll who reply just be cafe on the road

              LOL! Yeah, unfortunately, I had to use that little bolt. It helps for sure though.

              Also, I have a part # for that shoehorn thing, but good luck trying to find it.

              Usually if you go to the dealer, they can't (or won't) get it for you.

                another thing that ive notice is that at the bottom of the tensioner theres a small 8mm bolt whats its purpose ? just curious waht will happen if its loosen

                  yeah they can be hard to deal with at the dealership sometimes but i know a few faces there esp in the parts dept . so may be they'll let me borrow it can you send me the link to the step by step i cant pm for some unknown reason so here my adress . accordable02@aol.com

                    that small 8mm bolt seals in the oil inside of the unit. it also reveals the tightening screw. take out the 8mm and tighten the internal flathead screw to pull the spring in, then slide the holder bracket over the tensioner, and reinstall the 8mm cap. dont tip it over, you dont want to lose any of the internal oil.

                      oh i cee , you untighten the 8mm to ease the tension to put the bracket in place .. ahh i got it now ... so is there any styep by step pics laying around there must be some info with pictures some where .. but in the mean time i'll try that method .

                        the only worthwhile step by step guide is in a Chiltons manual, which i would highly recommend. it covers all F22/H23/H22, as well as all 90-97 accords... it covers all the little details like this in the Timing belt procedure

                          ok atlast ive done the replacment and like ive said the guy at the dealership were more than helpful. insted of getting one of the tensioner brackets i was given two hehe , and to top it all off the instructions photocopied from the workshop manual . i wanna send a copy to the forum so how do i go about doing this ??
