I was looking at my F20A DOHC motor and assembly today, and it seems very wide, infact maybe even wider than the entire V6 setup...packaging was obvisouly not an issue due to the I4 configuration and the loads of space in the engine bay...the Intake manifold, motor, and DC header is what takes up such space,
In the V6, the intake mani is between the cylinders and the headers are below the cylinders....its seems to be a very compact package...
Im going to try visiting a Honda/Acura dealership and getting some measurements.
oh, almost forgot...another addition to the list:
custom drive shaftsDEVOTE

Front to back, the J series is about the same as a 4 cylinder with manifolds.
Side to side the V6 and tranny are shorter.
only 3 cylinders worth of length.

so there should be very little issues regarding interference, how about the height?...
i was just browing the net and found this site...a 6apeed TL swap...there are some good pics of the TL engine, tranny, harnesses, an so on.

Couldn't get a good measurement of height with the engine in the car, so that I don't know about for sure.

so I wouldn't be that hard to swap it in..just need to do a bunch of fabbing due to mounting...relocating lines, hoses and reworking a new harness and ecu for this setup! and etc etc..just the things AROUND the swap is what needs the attention!
Hmm never thought of that! ...but it makes alot of sense..a 4 cylinder is WIDER ( from side to side )...but the V6 is wide according to firewall to Radiator! thats where it fills up..( firewall to Radiator ) NOT side to side
now I know...just from THINKING...it will be a BITCH to change the back 3 plugs..once that swap is in!...
Problem is an I4 block has a 12" long IM hanging off one end. Then on the other end, it has a 6" exhaust manifold. So you aren't really dealing with the block. You are dealing with the IM + the engine block +the exhaust manifold.
Total width front to back is actually slightly larger than the V6.
Why?
Even though you have 2 cylinder banks, they are only seperated by 60 degrees which not only keeps the cylinders naturally balanced, but also keeps them compact.
So what about the IM? It doesn't add to the width because it is tucked in between the cylinder banks.
How about the exhaust manifolds, they don't add to the width because they are tucked UNDER the cylinder banks, and thus the valve covers are still the widest part of the engine.
Here is a link to illustrate the compact packaging:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2000-...04470003QQrdZ1
It is an Ebay auction, so it will be gone eventually, but for now, you can clearly see that the VCs are the widest part of the engine. Clear those, and everything else fits.Last edited by owequitit; 03-20-2007, 05:25 PM.

k here r some engine bay pics from the above link i posted....these pics are from a TL 6speed swap...
this is what i was concerned with...hood clearance...but then again...custom mounts
the 6speed tranny is smaller...which is a good thing.

only down side is his is auto.
1) the height of the entire engine....from oilpan to intake manifold.
2) The vertical distance to the engine mounts from the intake manifold.DEVOTE

I heard if you do the 3.2 TL-S swap into an av6 the engine sits a bit higher. I hear people just notch the underpinnings of the hood a big and it fits Might as well make a big ram air system for the accord if it sits too high =P finally a functional hood scoop on an accord lol.

wow..
i wanna see this thing takes off.....
keep us informed..
thank you
there's no mad scientist yet... those pics are from a 6speed TL swap...just so we can have a look at the engine bay.
we are brainstorming as to what is needed for a J30/32/35 swap...
its seems as complicated as a K swap....except this swap will yield much higher power gains with minimal modifications to the motorDEVOTE
