Exactly. Tuning a Honda, especially a CB7, is not the way to be the fastest thing on the street. Especially with so many quality turbo cars so readily availible. 30k for a used STi or Evo, 25k for a new Mazdaspeed 3, 15k for a used SRT-4... then you get into the 90s, where you can find DSMs for next to nothing (if you want to fix the problems associated with years of abuse! ) To get a FWD Honda up to speed with those cars, it takes considerably more money.
Then you take into account the fact that we have fairly heavy cars. The CB7 is NOT an ideal platform for anything in particular. It has great potential as an all around performer, but it definitely does not stand out in any one particular area. It's heavier than a Civic, FWD, not turbo stock, and not extremely nimble. The choice to tune a CB7 shouldn't be based on anything but a love for the car! It IS a wonderful driving machine, IMO!
Back on topic, the K series is superb. The headflow characteristics have been improved greatly over the VTEC H and B series monsters of the 90s. The import tuning bug has bitten US drivers well after the design of the H and B engines, so the K series may very well have amateur tuning in mind in the engineering (an assumption, but a good one).
Still, getting a K series engine to work properly in a CB7 will take more than just some fabricated mounts. Axles, shift linkage, electronics... all things that will make for a fair amount of headaches! For the price of a K swap, you could have a turbo H22. As Draztik said, it's all about what you want... if the originality of having a K swap is worth the cost, then I say it's justified! Hell, I still have great respect for the guys that had the H22 swap back in the day... I believe Accord SiR had his in the 90s! (I may be wrong, but I know he had it for a LONG time compared to most of us!)
