    leaky h22

ok fellas i hope some of you can shed more light on my leaking h22.

it's been leaking since the swap (almost a year now). yeah yeah i know i'm lazy! it's very minimal like 2-6 drops under the car after a drive but it's still a leak. it's coming from the timing belt cover! i'm sure there is a seal retainer on the balancer shaft seal as it was installed during the t-belt change. i have yet to crack it open to investigate.

before i do so, what should i expect it may be leaking from? the balancer shaft seal is still suspect. i hope it's not bad!

if it is in fact coming from inside the timing cover, it could be any of the few seals in there, and the only way to find out is take the cover off. fortunately all the seals are cheap and if you arent afraid of the timing belt, they are easy to replace.

you sure its not coming from that thin edge of the oil pan, and just dripping to the bottom of the timing cover? spray some engine degreaser and rinse it off to get it completely free of oil, and try to find exactly where its starting from

Could be any number of seals up in there.

The cam seals will typically leak eventually.

The balance shaft seals can leak, although in my experience it is more likely the cam seals, or it could be an oil pump seal.

You should see when you get the cover off, because there will be evidence of and oil trail down to the bottom.

Maybe it is your oil pan gasket...right where it seals up to the oil pump housing.

thanks for the quick responses. i suspected the oil pan but it really doesn't look like it's coming from there. i'll clean it off tonight and inspect. i'd hate to remove that cover while on the car. it was a ton easier when the motor was on the garage floor.

is it typical for anything inside the timing cover to leak?

very easily could be one of the seals inside there. crank seals like to dribble out from the bottom edge, and cam seals all eventually leak too...

if you remove the front mount and loosen the studs on the driver mount, the motor hangs low enough that you shouldnt have any problems working on it while its still in the car... pulling the covers off is no problem.

i have a solid rear mount. will that conflict the motor tilt? i'll pull the cover off first and find the problem before doing anything major. thanks mike!

i'm hoping it's just the oil pan gasket. hondabond!!!

since he did do the TB change and stuff on it, that acorn nut shouldnt be a problem. Man that was a bitch on my wifes cb.

looked under there last night. it is definitely coming from inside the timing belt cover. could it be possible that having a lightened flywheel is ruining the harmonic balance of the crankshaft?! the seals are taking a toll?
