    lost motion assembly?

ok so i think the timing might be part of the problem with the noise in my engine...but i dont think i explained to whole situation clearly...about a month and a half ago after i had my h22 swap in and working i had driven my car to my girlfriends house...she lives about 7 minutes away...i was there for probably 20 minutes...after we left i noticed a weird smell, so i pulled over and saw that the small heater hose on the passenger side was broken and coolant was coming out...i was only 5 or 6 minutes from home so i decided to drive home...i did not drive it hard or fast to get home, when i pulled into the driveway it started to smoke...i went about 30 mph and tried to keep it below 4000 rpm...after i fixed the problem my engine started making a noise...it is a metalic rattling noise...when it is idling you can not really hear the noise but when i close the butterfly valve on the throttle body it really starts to make the noise and when i open the tb it really starts to make the noise...i checked the coolant and oil to see if it had mixed and both were clean...i talked to two people that work on engines and hondas and they both said that it sounded like one of the lost motion assemblies/rocker arm had seized up...has anyone ever heard of this happening? or does anyone have any other suggestions as to what might be wrong with my engine?

im not sure because when i swapped in the h22 the harness was missing the wires for the oil pressure light and the temperature gauge...so i dont know...i hadnt been driving it hard before it broke...and i hadnt been driving it but maybe 8 or 9 minutes before the hose broke...so i dont think it was very hot...but i dont know...

being paranoid, i personally would not have driven the car after the swap without the temp gauge... without it makes it hard to know if it got too hot or not.

once you fixed the hose, how much coolant did you have to add before it was full again? also, try to figure out a little more precisely where the sound is coming from... is it coming from under the valve cover?

As mike said find out where the sound is comin from. As for the smoke part if you were smoking I would just stopped your just asking for more damage to occur if you keep on driving even if you were close to your house and never drive without a temp gauge as you found out the hard way its pretty damn important.

It is highly possible that you fried something very expensive... overheating will do that. Especially if you set your personal rev limit to 4K... why not try to keep it as close to idle as possible?

Ultimately, you will probably have to tear into it to get a proper diagnosis. Wristpins often sound like valve train noise etc.

Diagnosing the location of the sound may help some, but sound also reverberates through metal very well, and it can be very difficult especially with all the other little sounds being generated in your engine.

I once had a failing water pump that you would have sworn was in the block near the #4 cylinder, on the complete opposite side of the engine. It turned out that it was just the water pump rattling and reverberating through the engine.

I figured it out when it failed.

Depending on how low the coolant actually got, your cylinders may have overheated, or any other number of problems.

The smoke is also a bad indication.

well it didnt smoke until i pulled into the driveway...i dont remember how much coolant i had to put into it...also i can not really tell where the noise is coming from...it sounds like it is coming from the head but then it will sound like it is coming from below the intake manifold...so i dont know

The fact that you saw it smoke at all is not good. How do you know that it wasn't smoking while you were driving, and you just couldn't see it because of the airflow?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think this one will be cheap or easy.

I hope for your sake that it is, but I am not optimistic.
