    Tie rod/toe q?

How are the tie rod ends supposed be positioned thread wise. I got an alignment but Im in the process of getting a new r&p. How far on the tie rod should it be screwed since you are taking that and the nut off and putting it on the new rack so the toe wont be off.

if you are changing your rack your toe is going to change regardless. but to get it as close as possible you need to count the turns when taking the tie rods off, and put them on the new rack the same amount of turns. This does not mean your alignment will be the same...you will still need to have a toe adjustment done. hope this helps and if you have any more questions, ask away.

If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacement anyway.

Well i observed today that my tie rod end and the inner boot have somehow unscrewed some so the nut isnt in the same spot. it was 1/4 of the way toward the boot so i know that it is all jacked up now. And another question, I took off my steering wheel to rewire the horn so it would work. How do you re-align the steering wheel in the correct spot since now its pointed near 10 oclock while going straight? I tried backing out, driving down the street coming back into the driveway and unbolting the steering wheel and putting it back on with the wheels straight but its still off.

how do you know its off? take it off and move it by however much you noticed its off by, then get a feel for it again. it couldnt take more than 1 or 2 times till u get it right.

They would straighten the wheel if you get an alignment.

thats just the lock nut, just tighten it back, the tie rod end can't turn because it connected to the spindle.

and Mike, not everyone will straighten the wheel for you. Be sure to ask.

I wouldn't even bother, you're going to need an alignment. Counting threads might get it close, but not likely. Just go get an alignment.

ok, i've gotten an alignment before and I have never seen they guy doing it turn the tie rod ends to get it straight. So explain to me how the "electronic alignment system works" or how they align the wheels because all I see is them hooking something to the front wheels and looking at a computer and pushing buttons. They must get under the car and turn something? So if i put the new r&p on and put the tie rods on and take it to get aligned they will make it right?

Yeah. The computer just tells them how much it is off. Then they adjust the tie rods underneath until it is right.

Cool so I guess I wont get an alignment until I get the new rack in a month and a half. Funds are low!!

                        New Problem!!!

I am about to go get my rack and pinion this week for $55 bucks, which is a steal. But I have another major problem, I keep on breaking Lug Bolts for some strange reason. Is it because of the bad rack and pinion plus bad alignment or what? 2 broke off the front driver wheel at almost the same time and I almost wrecked since only 2 of the 4 lugs were on the wheel...no good! So I was just wondering what is the culprit?

I've had lugs beak, not while I was driving, but instead .. I was taking a wheel off ..
I'd assume it's just old age .. afterall, our cars parts are just as old as our cars ..

if you are breaking lugs, then someone probably cross-threaded them the last time they put them on. later.
