    Detachable rotors?

    hey

i need to get my brakes machined and i was wondering if the rotors can come off or if the mechanic needs to put the machine on the car, because apparently it is cheaper if they can come off...i want to know for sure just incase the guy decides to rip me off and say taht they can't when they can...

    any ideas?

    Thanks

Of course they come off. The hub is over the rotor though and it would be less labor to machine on the car.

yes, but it would cost more in labor hours to spend the time removing them from the car, because they dont just "come off" they are on their pretty good.

so youre going to have to weigh the cost difference between the two options...

i wasn't sure when i rang up at first, and i said they were able to come off and he said $90 AUD and it would take about 2 hours and then i went in to book a time and then he had a quick look and was thinking maybe to leave them on and it would cost $140 AUD and that would take up to 5 or more hours..

also i rang other places when i was saying they would come off and others were saying around 2 hours as well,

Oh, you're in Aussie. Well hello mate.

yeah, a skimming job takes around 2~3 hours (depending on where the skimming is done)

We here send it to an engineering shop nearby and they will do it in around 2 hours or so (depending on the workload they have)

Detaching the rotor takes less than 10 minutes.

On the wheel skimming (which is referred to here) is not really recommended, since it takes up valuable hoist space in the workshop.

so would those prices sound right?

the guy wasn't really sure if they could come off either, just from looking on the outside he just wanted to let me know of the prices...

but this other guy i go to who is a mechanic said he couldnt' do it cos he didn't have the machinary to do it off the car...

so can the rotor definately be machined off the car?

Im not sure of the charges there, so I cant help much in that.

The rotors can be taken off quite easily.

And yes, the rotors can be skimmed while they are on the car

if your gonna pay that much just go ahead and get some new ones. its better to get new ones and not worry about them for a while than get the old ones machined and pay twice as much.

ok, so as a last clarifying question:

is it normally cheaper to have the rotors taken off and machined?

                        it is, over here atleast.

It usually costs less than 1/5th of a new rotor here, labour, tax and all.

Heck, it costs around 3USD per face to skim here.

A new stock rotor from Honda costs around 60

that and you also run the risk of warping the rotors. Since you removed some material from the surface of the rotors, there's less that the rotor can dissipate in terms of heat. Since the rotors are a smallish 10.2 inches already, I wouldn't do this "skimming" or machining on the car.
