** problems w/ Denso OEM Xenon ballast **

had a chance to try and install my new HID setup, purchased from

    www.hidexpert.com

    - Denso OEM Xenon "slim" ballasts
    - Phillips D2S 4300k bulbs

here is whats taking place. i connected the ballast directly to my H4 plug, (+) and (-) respectively. when i turn the lights on, my fuse blows out
i disconnect everything, replace the fuse and decide to test it directly from the battery. here is what i noticed.. i laid the ballasts down right on top of the chassis above the pass. side headlight. the ballast has an all metal frame, and as soon as i touch the (+) terminal on the battery using the lead wire from the ballasts, the bulb lights up; and this is happening w/o the (-) lead wire NOT connected to the (-) terminal on the battery. when it was connected, thats what caused my 20amp headlight fuse to blow out earlier.

so i take a piece of cardboard, slide it under the ballast, and repeat what i just did. this time, the bulb doesn't light up unless i have both lead wires(+) and (-) from the ballast having contact with the battery.

this is my first time using this type of ballast and if anyone has ever dealt with something similar, please post up. coz from whats happened so far, it seems as if the body of the ballast is self-grounding which i've never heard of.. unless there is something else wrong

*i've emailed the seller and he hasn't responded yet, but any info would be appreciated.

Ahhhh what a terrible ballast design, it grounds itself out to anything it contacts. Figure out a way to keep it from making that contact and you're golden. Hopefully the ballasts aren't damaged.

          ^^^ that ain't pretty

but the ballasts are still fine and the output is so much better w/ these phillips bulbs encased in the H4 casper shields. i just gotta figure out a way for it not to ground out. and definetely no sandwich bags in my bay; gotta keep it clean.

did that already.. we're both stuck. plus, i have a newer design of the Denso ballasts and wiring them up isn't difficult.

just upset considering i've had previous kits that were aftermarket and didn't have any problems. i decided to go with this setup so i can use them if and when i do another projector retrofit, but didn't expect this problem at all.

I would spray the housings with rubberized undercoating to insulate them from grounding and vibration, although it may not look the best.
I wouldn't trust paint to stay on, maybe you could coat it in that liquid vinyl you can make tool grips with?
And I wonder if the ballast needs to be somewhat open to release heat?

Yeah, what a stupid design (if it's working right)

^^^ i was thinking about that as well; coating the backside of the ballast with some type of vinyl or rubber coating. i dunno, i'll see what happens after the seller gets back to me. i have little patience so if i can return it, so be it.

                      The whole thing is stupid.
If you just use bushings, then it still shorts when anything metal touches between it and the body (screwdriver, keys, etc.)
If you coat the whole thing it looks ugly and holds heat.

Send it off to get powdercoated, .

I have these exact same ballasts hehehe..Never have that problem though..

As for mounting them, I actually just used those thick and strong 3M double-sided tape (for outdoor and indoor use, so it's waterproof)..It holds out fine, so far so good, never really have grounding problem..My only problem is jus loose wires..I think my solder might have come loose or something hehe..

                        Good ballasts though, definitely

i have that 3M tape as well coz thats what i used before to mount past HID ballasts. i'll get to it later next week and hopefully end up keeping the kit. overall, its a high quality kit when compared to those aftermarket, ebay specials, plug -n- play kits out there.
btw, any recommendations on where i can mount the driver's side ballast? thanks

From the factory these ballasts are all mounted in plastic inside the headlight assembly and desingned not to be grounded out. I've got a set waiting to go into my car right now and have been looking for a way to install them as well.

On a side note I'm using some matsushita (OEM Nissan/Infinity) ballasts in my truck right now and they are the same way. I ended up mounting them to the inside of my grill (Plastic).

Take note that it's possible for the braided mesh wire going to the bulb to ground out on the chassis as well. I wrapped mine neatly with two layers of electrical tape.

Good luck with the install and let us know what you did to make them work. L8r
