Best product to use for sealing tail lights?

My tail lights are leaking (both in the Fit and in the CB7...) I need to pull them out and seal them up. What's the best product to use? I don't want to gunk them up with something that's not going to seal correctly.

I searched a bit, but it seems most of the leak issues discussed here involve water in the trunk. I don't have that problem. I just need to correct the leaks that are turning my lights into fishtanks!

My issue was the gasksts. The way that the trunk/taillights butt up to each other, water runs behind the lights, regardless. Without a fresh gasket to absorb the water, you'll see fish swimming. You can inspect the tail lights, especially the cb lights and tell where the water is getting in.

That's true. I hadn't thought it could just be the gasket letting the water in. Crap. I don't want to have to buy a gasket! (at least with the Fit, I can get new ones easily!)

It's the Fit I'm worried most about, since I've been driving it without a passenger side tail light for the past few weeks (it has an inch of water in it at all times.) That's the one I'll be focusing on today, whenever the rain stops.

Really any clear sillicone sealent mean't for water.

I have one for my rain gutters and that shit works great.

The gaskets are a problem on the cb, and you can just get material from any place and cut out the gaskets as opposed to buying them.

if its the gasket the seals the lights to the rest of the car then foam rubber just became your new best friend

get some mouse pads and cut them to the shape of your tail light gaskets. it helped me. i had puddles on each side behind the tail light.

or maybe in your case might be coming from the spoiler gaskets since you say its rusting. do you know if the spoiler was an add on from the dealer or added later?

Yeah, I looked through some of those... dismissed them because the problem they were solving was water in the trunk, rather than in the lights. I guess that may solve my problem as well!

Might as well give it a shot. I haven't looked yet, but I bet the OEM gasket from Honda for the Fit will be like $25 or more!

The foam sheets from the craft store (pic'd above) have worked well for me as t/l gaskets for many years now. I would also suggest silicone for the lights themselves like Ralphie said.

My old LeBaron had your problem and my quick fix was to drill a 1/8" hole in the bottom of the taillight itself to allow the water to drain out instead of collecting. Drill the hole at the bottom as far down as you can.

I used the black windshield sealant, filling the groove where the two halves meet just a little over half way.

                      +1
I used the same stuff, and if you wipe up the excess it looks ok too.

Did you have to pay a core charge when buying, or did you surrender your testicles at the register?

I took the Fit's light apart. The gasket was dirty and stiff, so I washed it. It came back to life, so we shall see if it keeps water out for another 250k miles.
I'll definitely check into the methods mentioned here on the CB. I actually have a good replacement light for the current fishtank, so if the colors match (sometimes they don't), then I'm already a step ahead!

                              no haha
I found the mat in the bargain bin at Menards, a huge, sorta local hardware store.
I'll have to check my MRT to see how long ago I did it...

EDITED: It's been a year with no fish tanks!
