    H22 Hesitation between 2-3k

I just installed my H22. Everything seemed to be working fine then all of a sudden the car starts to hesitate at around 2.5 k until 3k then takes offs.

I slowed down to get back into that RPM range and it did it again and it does every time I'm around that RPM range it hesitates a little. One time it did it so bad, I ended up turning off the car while rolling and started it back up and the problem disappeared. No CEL.

Every since I installed the engine I never really noticed the low end torque I thought this H22 would have. It feels really weak when taking off. Could this hesitation be a timing issue? I have seen a lot of post about Knock Sensor might be causing this but no definitive answers have been posted. Anyone?

Yes the EGR is connected. I cleaned out the egr and even installed a new one. Still the same problem.

            APEXi WS

I just installed a Apexi-WS catback. Much better when VTEC kicks in. Before it felt like the air just wasn't coming out fast enough. Still the same problem hesitates around 2-3k RPM

No CHECK ENGINE light. I have seen a lot of post about this but no clear answer. Some say timing, some say Knock Sensor, Some same Distributor.

I have never had the Timing Checked. I installed it with the way the engine came. One thing that’s confusing is that when I restart the car, the hesitation disappears. Like the ECU resets something. Could it really be the Knock Sensor? Or could my timing be off?

Buying a new exhaust won't help with the problem. Did you check your cap/rotor? spark plugs/wires?

The stock exhaust had a hole in it that is the reason I purchased the new exhaust as well as for the look. I have check all the tune up parts and everything checked out.

I did notice that after I changed out the plugs the power was beautiful then, that's when I really started to notice this hesitation the next day.

                    Grounds...

I am going to check my grounds. I called the Engine company where i purchased my H22 from and they told me that this issue sounds like a ground problem. I am going to buy some ground straps from autozone and redo some grounds. I will let you know how it goes.

You should definitely check your timing.

Did you take off or move the distributor at all? Some people only replace cap/rotor and think its fine. A lot of times, the timing is way off.

Just yesterday, I checked the timing on an h22. It was SUPER retarded, even tho the distributor was in the middle. The guy's had his h22 for at least 2 years and never checked the timing. He never had any hesitations, but still.

Also, did you do a timing belt job? Did you mess with any wiring?

I installed the engine with the original timing belt is looked like new. So I decided not to mess with it. I never touched the Distributor. I remember when I first connected the ground from the batt to the upper frame, the cable got really hot to the touch while the engine was running.

I added another ground cable to the transmission and connected to the batt. I drove the car and it felt smoother, in just about every gear. I thought it was in my head, so I removed the cable and drove it again and there was noticeable difference smoothness was gone. So I connected that new ground and the smoothness came back. It feels really smooth.

I don't feel that hesitation anymore. Maybe it was the ground. I will keep my speed in that range as often as possible to see if it comes back; So far so good.

I will also get a timing gun to check the timing. What should the timing be set too?

                            15*BTDC.

Just get a regular timing gun and align the marks on the flywheel to the marker on the engine.

Great will do. One other thing. I noticed that when I turn on my A/C, the idle drops pretty low and then comes back up and drops again. I have heard that having to much Freon in the system can cause this. Is this true, could it be something else causing this?

I really appreciate your support with this.
