Benefits of Blocking EGR + Evap

I'm in the process of getting an EGR block off plate, I decided to get it since my EGR is nasty and I don't want to clean it along with the ports because I'm going to get a h23 IM. Although what are the benefits of blocking off the EGR? I also have heard about removeing the evap system? Could someone elaborate on that?

    Thanks

I have been wondering the same thing... What about the coolant lines is there any pros or cons to just connecting them together? Not trying to hijack the thread just curious. Later

egr - exhaust gas recirculation. loops exhaust gas around and back into all of the intake ports. helps make sure all fuel is finished being burnt out of the exhaust (at least the exhaust that gets recirculated). reduces emissions. blocking it off raises emissions, but also keeps your car from burning exhaust gas instead of fresh clean air...

evap - fuel evaporation control. the cylindrical canister below the fuel filter has a line running to the top of the gas tank, and evaporated fumes get "stored" ... when the ECU thinks its the right time, it opens a solenoid and clears out the canister. so instead of gas evaporating into the atmosphere, the fumes get sucked into the intake tube (that red braided line on the top of the throttle body) and burned. the only thing ive noticed from removing this system is just a buildup of fuel vapor in the tank, so when i open the cap to fill the tank, i get more air hissing out, as compared to a stock car. doesnt bother me

those small coolant lines tap off of the thermostat housing and route coolant through all of the "sensors" on the intake manifold. most of which just adjust idle... fast idle valve allows more air into the intake when the coolant flowing through it is cold, etc... if you dont want any of those (they are just accessories to aid in comfort, really) bypassing all of those coolant lines isnt a big deal. mine are all bypassed w/ all sensors (valves, really) removed, and ive never had any issues.

youd be surprised at how much of the wiring and hoses and objects all in your engine bay are really unnecessary for the motor to run. a basic motor is just intake air, fuel injection/atomization, spark plugs firing, and exhausting. tons of things in the bay are either there for comfort or emissions, both of which dont concern me.

Good stuff Mike. Thanks... So blocking off the EGR doesnt subtract or add any power it simply keeps the exhuast from being recurcilated(sp?)?? Correct? And what is the easiest way to connect the coolant lines together? Buying one new hose and attaching the two ports together or what? Thanks again. Later

hmm...interesting....comfort I care about but emissions is not really on my list of priorities....

anyone know from where I can get an EGR block off plate?

I made my egr block off plate from an old cd rom from my computer. I put the egr valve on top traced it, and cut it with tin snips, and I smoothed the edges with a swan. I then made 2 holes on both sides with a appropriate drill bit size, and voila it drops right in.

I'm still not convinced on how much the egr system on our cars helps. It only pulls exhaust from one cylinder, and then distributes it. How much un burnt gas can there be in one cylinder, and only taking 25% of it out of the motor and re-burning it can't be very effective.

Mines been blocked for 3 years or so now, and on my new cylinder head the egr port has been welded shut and smoothed out, completely eliminating the system. L8r

The EGR valve is an essential part of the emissions system. If you are due for the smog/state emissions test in the future I wouldn't mess with the EGR.

Why won't I pass smog? Please explain where my motor will fail...

Carbon Monoxide (CO), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) or Hydrocarbon (HC)

Which of the above does the egr affect, and how?
Just curious to see how involved this thread wants to get?
After my motor is back together, I'll gladly test the emissions, as I can do it for free at the service center next door to my work.

I'm building my car the way I want it, there is always, and will always be ways around emissions. If you are that concerned about it, don't mess with it, thats your choice, I personaly don't care what you do, in all honesty, it's not worth more than 1-2 hp anyway, so why bother in the first place????

I'm modifing the internal part of the head to create even flow on all cylinders, which may actually help me with some power, the block off plates are a gimmick in my opinion.

Best of luck to everyone, maybe someone will dyno a before and after of a block off plate install?
