    getting only 300miles a tank

Title says it all. When I fill my 92 accord wagon I'm only getting a maximum of 300 miles to a tank. About 17mpg. Are there any easy fixes someone who's not engine inclined can do?

One thing I can say is the car is definitely not leaking any gas and it doesn't smell like gas at all. It just burns it up real fast.

    A possibly related problem.

My torque converter I think is working backwards. It will engage when I accelerate , and disengage when I'm cruising. And it only does it when the car is cold , after that it doesn't engage at all.

The car also shifts real high/late. I don't have another car to compare it with , but always sounds late.

Torque converters only goes in one way. It could be a bad torque converter or tranny. Have you done a quick tune up(spark plugs, spark plug wires, dizzy cap and rotor, air filter/oil change)?

A recent write-up by yours truly:

      http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=186208

The third section of this write-up discusses driving style, which might benefit you the most. Also, check the basics that I've added in the first section. Even a simple problem such as a nonfunctioning PCV valve could be one of the issues.

How high is the transmission shifting?

I think you also need to get a better idea of your real gas mileage. Define a "tank" of gas. Your tank capacity (down to the very bottom) is about 17 gallons. 300 miles divided by 17 mpg is 17.6 gallons of fuel (more than your tank holds). If you fill up when the light comes on (typically at about 14 gallons in my Accords), then 300 miles / 14 gallons is 21.4 mpg (still not good depending on how you drive it). I suggest you keep a log of miles driven and fuel purchased and actually do the math to calculate the mileage; this way you'll know your actual mileage (so will we) and be able to tell how much improvement you get from repairs or changed driving habits.

For your torque converter issue, are you referring to the converter locking up (or not locking up)? Check to make sure the transmission has adequate fluid. Has the fluid been changed lately? If these things are taken care of and it still acts this way, tighten up the throttle cable to the transmission by about 1/2 to 1 full turn of the adjusting nut. Loosen the bottom nut by a little more than 1/2 to 1 full turn, then turn the upper nut by the 1/2 to 1 full turn to pull the cable up, then tighten the lower nut.

I had a look at that write up it looks pretty technical , not really very engine inclined but I'll try my best. It's shifts like way up by 3000 rpms , every other car I've driven (even my 1990 accord ex) shifts more like at 2000/2500.

A tank , as in filled all the way up the inlet hose , till the light turns on. I've done the math several times and 300 is the MOST I've ever got out of it..

As for driving habbits , I drive slower then everyone. Always in the slow lane , always slower then everyone at lights. Don't have insurance so I drive like a grandma.

Ok the last half of that paragraph you lost me , I'm really not very engine inclined lol.

300 is about correct. I usually fill mine up around there and get roughly 22-23 MPGs. In the summer I get more.

i get about 300-350 miles per tank thats 21-25mpg
keep in mind the wag is heavier than a sedan or coupe, also i have the H23 tranny in my car so that accounts for a loss of MPG, the city is shit for MPG though on a good week i get 18 lol

I used to get that. I did all the recommended maintenance and bumped up to 300.

You gotta be kidding me , it's a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder , and 17 mpg sounds just fine to you guys? It's supposed to be getting more.

This isn't some race car that's tuned up with stupid rims or something , it's stock and only getting 17mpg.

No matter how you look at it , that's not right. I think I will just take it to a dealer but thank you to those that tried to help I appreciate it.

How much gas are you putting in to fill it up? If it's 14 gallons, like when your light comes on, then it's 21.42, a little less than me.

Give it a good tune up and you'll be fine. If you still have issues then something else is wrong.

I have a 91 wagon with an f22a1, 5 speed (2.5 exhaust, c/a intake, NGK Platinums, NGK wires, Mobile 1 Full synthetic, Honda MT fluid), I usually cruise when driving but I can fill my car up completely and go 45 miles after my light comes on and I'm getting close to 445 a tank almost every single time.
