93 Accord shut off while driving....help!

I have a 1993 honda accord with 314,000 miles. Car is immaculate and has been taken good care of. I change the oil every 3k on the dot. A few monthes ago i had to replace my main fuel relay.

Last night i was on the way home and i was driving on the interstate going about 72 mph ( gas light was on) and the car just shut off on me so i cruised to a stop and put it in park and tried to start it and she started right up. I got off the exit to get gas and after i left the gas station i got about 1/4 away and it cut off again. I pulled over and tried to start it and it acted like it wanted to turn over but it didnt. tried it again and nothing at all happened. Let it sit for like 1 min and it started up and i made it to my house which was 2 miles away.

I am trying to find out what the problem is. It has oil, i replaced that main fuel relay, does anybody think my fuel pump could possibly be going out? thanks for the input guys. Im trying to get this fixed asap

Running out of Gas could've pulled debris from the tank.
That will clog the fuel pump, the fuel filter, and the injectors.

i have been reading alot about other accords doing this. one guy said it was the distributor. he said that basically the distributor after awhile heats up and fails after it get really warm, hench when it cools down it will allow the car to start and drive again. so i dunno. my gas light just came on like 5 min before this happened, so i dunno if i could have sucked anything into the fuel filter or injectors.

If you ran it dry then you definitely sucked stuff up.
Do you know what running out of gas feels like?
Besides sucking when you're on the highway, this:
The rpms will start jumping up and down. FOr me they did it, stopped, ran fine for another mile at 3k. Then they started doing it very violently and the engine shut off. You could almost say the torque converter was unlocking and re-locking very rapidly.

ok.....so what do you suggest i do then? i already put gas in it. should i put some fuel injetor cleaner or seafoam in my tank? i guess i just think it couldnt be that bc i have ran it to my gas light before...... i dunno....but you could be right

I usually run it till I have 1.5 gallons left in my tank.
If debris is the case, you'll need to clean your fuel system. I'd start with the fuel filter, but Idk what to do if it's gotten to your injectors. Fuel system cleaner will just make everything burn hotter, and I'm not sure you want to do that in order to force the debris through your injectors.

Maybe the ignitor module. My car would do this, well it shut off on the highway, waited about 45 mins and it started back up

was your tachometer jumping at all before it died? That would be a good sign of the igniter unit failing.

The only other thing I can think of since you already did the main relay is the ignition switch...when the car's on and running, if you tap the key or hit it w/ your finger does the car die? Not physically turn it but just tapping it simulates a vibration the car goes through to make the connection in the switch die.

okay, well i put some seafoam in my gas tank, hoping that would do something and so far the car has been running fine and hasnt shut off on me yet

no. i was just driving and the tach went down to 0, car shut off, and cel went on. i can tap or move the key while driving and it doesnt have any effects on it

the fuel injectors have filters on them there is a filter on the fuel pump and there is a filter in the fuel line i dont think anything would make it to the injector check clean filters dizzy might have oil in it ign mod might be shot but if your getting spark and fuel you should be good its alot easyer to help while looking at the car in person but good luck p.s. my car has 399750miles had this happen to me it was the ign mod.

Why does everyone think the fuel pump sucks in debris? Look..

If ANYTHING is getting through that filter, it's gas/water. That's it. No "debris". It'd be a lot cheaper to get a fuel pressure gauge, just to see if it's a fuel pressure issue. Plus it'd be nice to have. I'd say it's something in the distributor. Most likely the ignitor, as Accrd said. Hopefully it's not an ignition problem.

okay...... so this morning..... i let the car warm up for like 10 mins....then i went and got in it to leave for work and i put it in reverse and i backed up like 4 foot and the car shut off. I tried to start it and it tried to but just wouldnt turn over. I was wondering if it could be that fuel main relay ..... but i replaced that like a month ago....do you think it could be bad again? Is there anyway that i can test it to see if its bad or not. Also, since our cars are obd1, are there any obd1 code readers that i can buy so that next time the car shuts off i can read the CEL to see what it says.

Also, does anybody have any other suggestions of what the problem im having could be?
