Shaving off the molding on the front and rear bumper?

    Hey guys,

I'm having a friend of mine weld the side molding all around my car, to give it a nice flush look. But my true question comes with the front and rear bumper. I still want to keep the stock bumpers for sure, but I want to shave down the black impact strip on the front and rear. As far as I know, they were molded this way, and just taped off to look like its an individual piece of the bumper.

How would I go about this? Is there a plastic sort of filler I could use once I shave this down? Would fiberglass adhere to the plastic bumper to fill the gaps?

    Let me know, cheers.

I suspect that if you were to shave the black section flush with the areas above and below it, you will have two piece bumper covers - the cover isn't thick enough to do this without going all the way through.

correct... its been done, but the person used a lot of Fuzor plastic filler. anything else, like fiberglass, will peel right off of flexible ABS.

Okay cool... So this Fuzor plastic filler, do you have any experience with it? I'm curious how it might turn out. Any links you might know of, where the guy used it for the front and rear bumper would be great.

you can catch a couple glimpses in these pictures: http://www.cb7tuner.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=33492

you can see the shaved front bumper, in black. he had the back to go with it. i had both of his bumpers here at my house for a while (trying to find pics) and from the looks of it, he mainly filled in the crack above and below the moulding on the exterior, and i remember him saying quite a bit of fusor was used. years later it was still in really good shape and not cracking. here is a good selection of their products: http://autobodystore.net/Merchant2/m...gory_Code=6PRM

you will likely still need to sand down the moulding so adding some extra to the rear may be in order... not much more information beyond that, sorry

Great, thanks for the help. I'll fool around with the stuff and post pics sometime in the spring.

Your best bet for this is to make a fiberglass mould. Shave dwn the black trim and lay fiberglass down to create a new shaven bumper. Lots and lots of work. Thats the only way to have real long term results.
