Abandoned Buildings : PICTURES (56k beware! hundreds of pics)
heres a place not far from my house. Coordinates: 25°44'15"N 80°28'54"W
heres the history behind it...
Nike missile site from the Cuban Missile Crisis era, decomissioned in 1979. The former site of the launch facility is located about a mile north of this site, and is now used a detention center for illegal immigrants. Despite a fence and a sign pointing out that this is government property, it has been abandoned for decades. In recent years, pretty much only urban explorers, paintball enthusiasts, graffiti artists, and high school kids looking for a scare have ventured inside.

we just stumbled across this place on the side of the road, figured we would stop and take a few pics. this was actually during last summer (many months ago) but i had "lost" the pictures until i revived the old computer that they were on, so here they are.
not much story behind it, besides the fact that it was one of those oldschool combination gas/repair/sandwich/ice cream shops, and the gas pumps outside look really cool.
that was just a teaser, because i have about 300 pictures from 2 new places that we went to kinda recently, ive just been slacking for a while on getting those up. tonight maybe...
this complex was built back in the 1890s, originally intended to be a resort getaway, but 10 years later it was converted into a finishing school for young women. they continued making additions and expanding, but by 1977 it just couldnt compete with competition and was closed.
the original main building was called Halcyon Hall, and this is an original photo of the front/side from 1907:

here is the front of it today:

and just so you can get a better idea of the layout, here is an bird's eye shot of the campus. the front of Halcyon faces toward the field/tennis court. you can see the various additions and wings (apparently a science wing and a childrens wing). the tail-end single floor addition toward the top center of the pic is the Aldrich Library, which youll see a pic of later on.

before i get into the rest of my pictures, heres a shot of the Reception Hall from
back in 1907:

and for comparison here is that main staircase today:

someday id like to go back for a better shot of the entire room, but with a flash it worked best on just the staircase.
anyhoo on to the pictures (get ready, theres a lot)... let me know what you think!
