    Blu-Ray or HD-DVD

This is gonna be a huge war in the up coming months. List your pro's and con's if you like.

Personally I would do with the Blu Ray disc...more space equals more room for data and being able to but better quality movies on them.

I don't see why people hate on the blue-ray...is it because they hate the ps3 that much?

HD-DVD is a waste of money. For $700 the player can do 720P or 1080i, where as a up-converting DVD player for $120 can do the same resolution. A videophile might be able to tell the extremely small differences but a regular consumer wont be able to. Blue-ray is still having some problems, especially with their very soft pictures. Even with that problem it looks so much better than HD-DVD. Both can do amazing sound quality with HD Dolby Digital. So sound is the same. Toshiba is fucking up with the HD-DVD, they need to let other people mass produce it if the want the technology to survive. If not they're gonna end up like beta-max.

That's just my opinion. I might be wrong

ah, the next iteration of the battle of the formats.

sony's huge debut of blu-ray didnt quite work like they had expected, but i still think its a better format thats going to end up making it over hddvd. but who knows what tricks or new technologies other companies may come out with in the coming years that may push hddvd over the edge. i guess we will see...

This wont be decided by computers, but Apple is looking to be a backer of Blu-ray at this moment, and M$ is backing HD-DVD. Should be interesting.

            EDIT:

50gb discs will arrive soon after using the dual layer technology that made regular DVDs hold close to 10GB.

I think that Blu-ray will win this one...I mean ps3 supported out of the box is a win-win situation, but then you have the HD DVD name wher I think it will prevail just by the name DVD in it

The PS3 is the cheapest blu ray player on the market right now...

but i am an honest believer of how history repeats itself. any one remember Betacrap? I think that was sony, too, wasnt it?

i am not sure about all of the technical specifications... But Im not completely sure about blu ray and its sucess

DVD i believe became an industry standard because it was such a radical step ahead to developers as well as the consumer markets. "A movie on CD? no WAI!!!!"

lets face it, the general consumers do not look at technical specifications like the media junkies. People will look at it as "Ok, its another disc.. but more expensive... wtf... I got a dvd player that works great!"

Let me use my parents as examples. Fairly new(2 yrs old) projection Hitachi HDTV 56"
Samsung DVD... they love it "it looks so good!"

i introduced them to the blu ray at work(gamestop)

my dad: "whats the fucking difference besides the price?"
my mom: "I dont know daniel, i just dont see us spending that much money on a dvd (me: mom, blu ray") whatever player, when we already have one that works good!"

I think it was the same with beta... VHS was already introduced.... "I already have a video cassette recorder... why the hell do i need another one for tapes that are more expensive?"

And as of right now, the HD market is a little to narrow to really appeal to the common consumer... not a whole lot of average Joes can/want to go out and buy a $800+ player and $30+ discs when you can go to your nearest liquor store, buy a $50 dvd player and $15 NEW movies.

A LOT of it has to do with marketing... I wonder how good the UMD market is doing now.....

i dont know, blu ray might take off but in the distant future, imo...

DVD is a standard, because it had no competitor.

I think that Blu-ray will win, only because of the PS3's out of the box support. the 360 supports HD-DVD, but only if you buy the special HD-DVD player add on.

This war is young, It wont be over any time soon.

PS. IIRC, Betamax lost because Sony kept is purely in house. VHS was FAR cheaper too. Betamax WAS the superior format, but it was more expensive, and less available. Lets see if Sony repeats its mistake, or learns from it. They sure didnt with Mini-Disc in the mid 90's.

you're right. the average consumer isnt ready for another jump in media formats.

DVD came out in the late 90s while VHS lived on until about ~2002, 2003, when the movie industry stopped production and advertisement of VHS products. so because VHS had a good 15+ year lifecycle, DVD still has a long life ahead of it, as far as i'm concerned.

but the most logical step is the one with more space, for better, larger image quality. blu-ray wins that contest. we'll see what happens... but HD-DVD has gotten support from some of the larger, more influential corporations.
                          My pictures/photos will return soon...

Y not make solid state disks that don't have to spin...like the usb drivers that everyone has....I have a 512MB miniSD San Disk and that thing is 0.8" x 0.8" x .05" thick...and I've seen 4GB versions...one the size of a CD maybe able store much more memory ...same size...oh well...

if I had to choose...Blue Ray all the way... mainly b/c it sounds like a new technology rather than the HDDVD...the phrase HD is over used and is more cliche than marketing slogen.

because flash memory is expensive. FAR more expensive than any disc will ever be.
