What should I buy with my Christmas money: Macbook or Nikon D50 SLR?

I recently sold some parts and recieved a good amount of Christmas money. I have the money but can't decide what I want to get with it. I have around $1300. I basically have 2 scenarios:
    1. Buy a Macbook laptop ($1265) which I originally planned to use the money for.
Pros: I'll be able to do creative stuff with it. I'll have a laptop (I sold my old one to get a macbook)
cons: I won't have any money left for other things that I want. I'm not sure if I'm willing to make the whole switch to Mac from PC

    2. Buy a Nikon D50 SLR Camera (a high end digital camera ~$650); some tools; and save the rest of the money.
Pros: I'll have a sweet camera that can take awesome pictures.
Cons: I won't have a nice computer to put or edit the pictures on. I won't use this on a regular basis.

Let me know what you guys think I should do. I have more of an idea of what I want now that I made this post. If anyone has experience with either the macbook or the camera, I'd like to know how you like them.

i'd go macbook. i paid roughly $2000 two years back for a 1.33ghz powerbook and no regrets. my first mac, damn slow by todays standards but its not the computing power that ever impressed me. the operating system, the battery life (very impressive for its age), the display and the wifi. the macbook does osx, windoze and linux and having all 3 operating systems at your disposal makes for a versatile computer.

      good luck in your decision

macbook before the camera. and while youre saving for the camera, learn photoshop. youll appreciate its functionality if you really do get into photography...

macbook pro. the macbook is a very poor computer graphics wise, since it doesnt have a separate video card. its pretty much worthless for gaming.

just a thought. however, between the two, macbook. I love my "mac"

^^ He won't be able to get the pro with that money. But, the pro you can get a 15 or 1 inch screen, which would kick ass compared to the macbook 13 inch. Anyways, between the two I would get the macbook. The switch between pc and mac isn't too hard. Didn't take long for me to get used to it. You'll love the mac and once you've used it you'll be like....why the hell didn't I switch sooner?!?!

I know. but he could put it as a downpayment for a MBP and finance the rest through apple financial. or he could just wait and save.

i honestly think/belive the macbooks are highly overrated...when i was in school during the fall smester..people ran into so much bullshit with apples..people only bought it because its a fad..and the cool laptop...the new dell looks sick..when i find my new magazine i got..ill let you kno the name of it..unless someone else knows...just research for a beter laptop than the mac..you can porbably save money and find something better

                          I'd honestly avoid Dell laptops.

My Inspiron is all but useless. I'm well aware that it's my own fault for buying the bottom feeder model, but I've had nothing but problems with it. The power supply is so touchy that if I press on the AC plug in the back of the computer when it's on, it just shuts off. For the longest time just opening and closing the computer would cause it to shut off as well. The battery lasted a little over a year and a half and I rarely ran it just on the battery. The battery life was about 23 minutes if I didn't use the computer much. If I leave the battery in the computer now with the power supply hooked up, the invertor/convertor box heats up to the point of being troublingly hot. The RAM I purchased for the computer with all the specs matching doesn't work...I could go on and on.

macbooks are amazing computers. the fixed the heat issues that they were having with the core duo processors.

Im curious, what kind of problems were people at school having?

EDIT: mike, I love my inspiron. Guess I got a good one
