    Paypal Fake Emails

Is anyone else getting those emails that you have to update your account in a few days or it will be suspended until you do?

I have gotten them for a few weeks now, and today was supposed to be the last day that you could do something about it. They look like they are legitimate emails, but after hovering over a link, it takes you to some weird ass site. Of course, the help one at the bottom looks like it goes to the correct site.

So if you are getting emails from Paypal, your best bet is to log directly into Paypal, dont click on any links in an email. Because these almost had me convinced. I reported it to paypal, and they said they are working on getting that site off the web.

But just a heads up so nobody accidently clicks on one and has to mess with a stolen account.

Yeah, I used to get those about a year ago, but then they stopped randomly.

yea, I used to get them everyday. But for some reason, i havent got them for a long time now, maybe like 2-3 months. whenever I see one, i never click on anything, it goes stright to the garbage.

Paypal will never email you like that, and it also doesnt have all those logos they use.

yeah, i never got any before that came into my regular mail, but these ones did.. and they all seemed legit. After about 8 of them, all saying that today was the last day to update, i went to my paypal addy to see if i really had to update something.

of course i didnt. But they did use the logos and all the regular stuff that paypal does. Im sure that these ones have sucked quite a few people in.

yea, they do look legit actually. I did click on the link once, but it only opened a black page, nothing happened.

They do more than that. By clicking the link, typically you're also sending the site your email address, thereby confirming that the spam they sent out hit a real address. So it gets sold again, and you get more spam, and so on.

Same thing with opening emails with HTML --- this includes "preview mode", not even opening it in a separate window. By loading the pictures and graphics, your computer has to request them from a site, same as when you visit as web page in your browser. The request-for-graphics also includes your email address typically.

Safest bet is to leave your email application to show subject lines only, not keep it in a preview mode. When you see a questionable email come in, delete it. If there's one you're not sure about, before opening it either tell your email app to not load images or else disconnect from the Internet so they can't load.

ah, i see. no wonder they stopped sending them. i havent clicked on them for a long ass time. also, they usually end up in my junk mail. so, whenever I see paypal in my junk, i know its not real so i delete it.

deckeda is completely correct, something most people dont realize... just opening the email or clicking the link (even if u dont put in any info) is still harmful...

** you all need to remember that there is not one single reputable business out there that will conduct business via email. ** if paypal needs you to update your records, they will either call you, or have you do it directly though your account once youre already logged into their website. if you get one of these emails, assume its a scam. if for some reason you think it might be real, any business that would be worth your while to update your secure information at would at least have a phone number you can call them at.

                    1. Download the SafetyBar, a toolbar for Outlook and Outlook Express,
                    which identifies known spoof emails.
                    2. Get eBay Toolbar with Account Guard which warns you when you're on a
                    potentially fraudulent (spoof) Web site.
                    3. Sign up for Equifax Credit Alerts for PayPal Users, a program that
provides an early warning detection system in the event of identity
theft. Find out more by visiting the PayPal Identity Protection Center
                    at www.paypal.com/idprotection.
                    4. Frequently monitor your PayPal account for suspicious activity.

Thank you again for sending us your report. We appreciate your efforts
                    to keep PayPal safe.

                    Sincerely,

                    PayPal

Thats the same one I got.

And today, I got one that looked like it was asking a question about a buy it now on an item I just put up for sale. Only thing that made me realize it was fishy was that there was no item number listed in the subject or anywhere like there usually is.

I have noticed that they are all coming from an ebay@wachovia.com email address.

and this is where one of the links goes to in mine aswell..
