    HELP: friends computer doesnt work

ok, heres the deal. i thought it was a power supply problem, so i put a new one in... still doesnt work. here is what happens. i plugged everything in, and i flipped the switch on the back of the supply... the fans on the supply and cpu started spinning and the front light turned on. only thing is, i never pushed the button to turn the computer on.

but when i do push the button, nothing happens. cd-drive never turns on, and HD's never spin.

    what could it be?

    sounds like a bad motherboard.

was it hit by lightning? my friends recently died completely, put a new p/s in it, and it was doing what you said. threw in a new motherboard which made it POST, only to find the hard drive was bad as well.

my advice is forst try installing a fresh copy of windows if you can get the drive open, try installing a different drive. then go from there if that doesnt work you know its the motherboard, motherboards are cheap now a days. you can find a decent one for $50 or under

that would have been my 2nd guess, thanks guys. thing is... its a bone stock emachines tower. he's not much of a computer guy, so he doesnt care about having the best or fastest shit. would he be better off replacing the board or getting a whole new tower?

Ugh eMachines is horrible, I had one several years back as my first computer. I think he would be better off getting a new computer, maybe he could get into computers by building himself one.

Only thing I can think is that the 'soft power' pins are shorted on the motherboard, therefore as soon as it gets power it turns on without being pressed. You can try pulling some of the wires that go to the system panel connectors. But I only recommend that if you know what you're doing sooooo..

... more likely, the mobo is bad.

on the stairs, she grabs my arm, says whats up,
where you been, is something wrong?
i try to just smile, and say everything’s fine.
