What do you mean by "exposed"? Why would you want the wires exposed?

if youre doing wiring in already finished walls, youre supposed to use "exposed" boxes... the blue ones he pictured are made to mount directly into a sheetrock face, you make the splice inside the box, and put a blank cover over it. its exposed, meaning you can still get to it by removing the cover.

unless you want two eyesore blank plates (one on either side of the door), use the joist boxes like i pictured... you have a hole cut in the wall and have access to the studs, the wall is basically unfinished where youre working...

Well it looks like I'll just stick with the metal boxes since I have them already and they'll still be safe.

then what about all of the junctions behind your walls that the electricians put in before the sheetrock went up?

he can use any box he wants as long as theres an exposed plate to access it in the future. simple. You cover it, its illegal. you have a fire you screwed isurance wise.

well turboaccordlx, I'm really glad you let me know that. I was actually going to do everything today, but now it looks like I need to put it on hold and get the right stuff.

So what your saying is, I need to mount it flush with the wall and just have a cover over it like a switch plate kind of deal, right?
