We, the consumer, can lower gas prices...

Idk if this would really work, but would make sence...

We are going to hit close to $3.00 a gallon by the summer. Want gasoline
prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas. It was more of an
inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of
this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join with us! By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about $1.50 is super cheap. Me too! It is currently $2.75 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to
think that the cost of a gallon of gas is CHEAP at $1.50-$1.75, we need to
take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the
marketplace.... not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing their gas! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices if we all act together to force a price war. Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two
biggest companies (which now are one), EXXON and MOBIL. If they are not
selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they
reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Exxon and Mobil gas buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp (sic) out on me at this point... keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!! I am sending this note to about thirty people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people and DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from EXXON and MOBIL. That's all. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE $1.30 RANGE AND KEEP THEM DOWN. THIS CAN REALLY WORK

Sounds believable; we also need to find out what other gas stations buy from both mobil and exxon.

oh god..not this again. it has to be the most uneducated campaign iv ever heard of.

now if president bush would stop opening his mouth and telling Iran that were going to kick there ass if they keep enriching uranium, gas prices probably wouldnt be so high.

you guys do realize that whatever gas you dont buy on that day..your going to have to buy eventually..the oil companies know that, there not stupid

You are one person; I also don't buy from those two, but everyday you see just as many people buying gasoline at ther place of business as any other gas station, am i wrong?

eric, you didnt read the whole thing... its not that "dont buy it on whatever day" scheme...

its basically saying we should boycott exxonmobil entirely, forcing them to lower their price to gain back business, which would in turn force other companies to lower their prices to compete. good idea, i guess it could work... boycotting isnt a new thing.

i read more of it than you think..

Boycotts have an inherent flaw. have you ever heard of the "free rider" paradox? its the same idea that brough communism down. People figure, 'I won't do it because it will take me time and effort, and everybody else will do it,'

An organized boycott MIGHT slightly cut into profits for a short time. but a completely random "chain letter" approach would never work. And even if you did get an organized boycott together, and you do in fact get ExxonMobile to lower its prices, there is NO guarenttee that other commpanies will do the same, in fact it could cause them to actually raise their prices.

People have tried this time and time again throughout history, the success rate is VERY small

Yeh...if more people got their heads out of their asses and drove smaller cars we'd make a lot more progress...I can go about 2 weeks without buying gas, what difference does a day make?

I always buy from Wawa. However, the same truck delivers to pretty much every station around, so it doesn't really matter. Exxon and Mobil (shows how old this is... Mobil is getting out of the retail side of things) are refineries. They aren't Middle Eastern companies. The ME companies send crude oil... I guarantee that nobody here could even name one of them. We refine the crude oil into usable fuels. That's it. Their crude oil prices are what affect our costs (and who knows... US government taxes could be a cause just as much! We don't know!) So, EVERY gas station we go to uses those crude oils. In fact, the lesser refineries most likely pay a bit more for what they get, since they don't have the purchasing power to demand cheaper prices... in a pinch, they'll just have to buy more to feed the demand (since we're not going to the big boys anymore...). They'll probably buy more oil, but at the same prices... which means they'll actually have to RAISE their prices. Exxon and 'Mobil' would just sit back while the little guys raised the bar, and then jump back in the game with slightly lower prices... that are still a major inflation from today's prices. Whoopee!

Yeah, you wanna save money on gas? Maintain your motor. Drive conservatively. Drive less. Buy a scooter. WALK!
