    search button .....

hey we always tell the noobs to use the search button..........yet the search button sucks.!!! lol....seriously...sometimes if you type something your looking for .......a crap load of irrelevant data comes up...

you really have to be creative with the search button....to find anything..i dunno maybe its just me..im not complaining i love the sight..but the search button doesnt find everything..unless its updated..sometimes finding threads is like finding a needle in the haystack..and sometimes its as easy as 123..its a 50 / 50 shot with the seach button

if we could incorporate google or some other search engine into the sight somehow.....then the search button would be awesome! i dont have the technical skill to do that..but im sure a few of you guys on here do know how to do it ( phempa ) and could link the search button to search this sight internally using google

well maybe all these newbie thread starters will fix stuff? i dunno just thinking outloud.......time to catch some Z's

I think that all search engines suck. Search engines don't always give you what you want. It's not as direct as posting a question and having real people reply and tell you the information you seek. I use the search feature but I don't like it because it's just like you said: Irrelevant.

You have to learn the lingo. I've found that using quotes (i.e. "jdm H22A ECU") returns much better results as it finds the exact phrase rather than any of the three words. There's a lot of info in the FAQs as well. This site has more info than 5 Haynes manuals...you just have to know where to find it. I haven't been to a mechanic in months, and I've had an assload of problems.

          you just answered your question.

why is it that moderators can always find threads within a couple seconds? ever notice that uncle_el is always cross linking repost threads? theres nothing special about being a moderator that makes searching work better... hes just taken the time to learn how to use it. anybody else can do the same...

there is a problem with the search engine that not many people think off..and its the reason why noobs can never find anything..

when a noob posts a question about something, and you KNOW it has been covered before, than you must have read at least part of the thread that covers the topic, and therefore you remember something about it (no matter how little, you remember SOMETHING).

When you do a search to show the noob that he is an idiot, and that your far superior because you can find the answer in a matter of seconds (i have been guilty of this on numerous occasions) , you are unconsciencly using the information stored in your brain to find what you are looking for. the noob does not have this luxury, so all they find is a bunch of random, useless threads. mainly because the search engine really does suck. all forum search engines suck. Computers cant read information like humans do, so an "idea" based search engine will never be quite right.

now if each thread had some kind of embeded information in it, in a form that a computer can fully understand. the search function would work 600x better.

implementing the wiki is on my list of 700 projects to be done..it will put all the information on the site in a structured database that is easy to navigate, and doesnt have all the useless comments inbetween.

like my post above..he has been around since the begining. he knows what words to search for. Hell, he practicly made every FAQ thread on the site, i would hope he can find them!

The real reason why noobs can never find anything is because they're retarded. I've found PLENTY of threads I never even knew existed before with the search engine, having spent only minimal time. The search engine kicks ass because it has the capability to search thread titles AND contents... that's all you need. You can't possibly think you will get what you want if you type in whatever stupid fucking idea you have about what something is called. You have to think about how posts would be written and what words would be used. THIS DOES NOT REQUIRE PRIOR KNOWLEDGE OF THE THREAD. If you can't find what you're looking for it either doesn't exist, or you're not doing it properly. IT IS NOT FUCKING ROCKET SCIENCE.
