anybody else hate how large cars modern cars are?

its just something that bothers me so much, WHY do cars need to be so huge? this isnt necessarily a compact car VS. SUV debate, more of an observation of how even "compact" cars are being designed. my girlfriend's mom just bought an 06 hyundai azena... amazing car for the price, i admit, but the thing is so big, i never even noticed that it didnt have a sunroof because the roof was so high and roomy.

theres no reason for cars to be this large IMO. for example, check out the two pictures below, the tall one is the original photo i stole from somebodys signature, while the one on the right is shortened to 80%... looks a ton better IMO.

thats actually not an issue for sure because over the years there is less and less headroom because of them having the seats sitting higher..

i cant stand a LOT of the new car designs, especially honda, because they are so bulky and plain looking..

The American "spread" is catching up with us. Also, a more "spacious" or "airy" atmosphere has taken precedence over intimacy as a styling trend. Their job is to sell cars, so they have to do what they have to do.

Besides, having spent the better part of my childhood in a family of five parading around the US in a 1988 Honda Accord, I can fully appreciate the additional space in my mom's '02. The '03 and up is even better.

having spent most of my childhood as a family of 4 at the time in a Yugo, the cb7 feels like a fullsized car to me. no reason to add 23894 sq ft of extra room

when i first started driving, i drove a 92 corolla, nice and tiny, plenty of room inside even to have a couple ppl in the back, but small enough to squeeze into any spot and it had a nice and tight turning radius... cb7 is very comfortable inside and maneuvers well, anything larger gets to be a PITA trying to park in a tight mall parking lot...

I agree with you cpmike. I would not be suprised if the current Civic sedan weighed as much as a 4th gen Accord coupe or even an Accord sedan. And the Accord now is big, ugly, and fat. I'm sure the difference in performance between a 1993 Accord coupe with 140 hp and an '06 Accord coupe with 255 hp isn't much more than a second in the quarter, despite the 115 hp difference. (I'm guessing based on observations I have made, don't flame me if I am wrong)

The new Si is within 100 lbs of my 90 LX sedan.

Though the new Accord is far faster.

                    When new.

Tho I'm sure you can see faster than 17.4 in a CB7, even most H22's aren't running 14.5 yet.

My first car was an 83 Sentra that had as much interior room as my CB7 does. I am not knocking maneuverability by any means. My daily driver is a '92 Civic hatch. I also think that for it's size, the CB7 has a HORRIBLE turning radius.

I am just saying that the space has it's advantages. I am also long legged, and although the CB7 is generally plenty spacious, there are some times that I wish I just had an extra inch or so to stretch into. Of course I am the type of person that drives until I need gas, so conceivably you are talking 5-6 hour stints. The Sentra and our 1992 Prizm and the 88 Accord don't have the trunk space of our '02.

The new SI weighs about the same as an LX four door CB7 or EX 2 door (just over 2800lbs). Keep in mind though too, all that weight isn't simply a result of size. Much of the weight increase is due to government mandated crash structure, and the fact that everybody wants a 5 star rating in all of the NHTSA's crash tests. That structure adds weight. The increased structural stiffness that people demand, adds weight. 6 Airbags add weight. 370 Watt sound systems and navigations systems add weight.

The new Accord EX V6 6MT with Navi weighs about 3300lbs which still isn't too bad considering you get 6 airbags, Dual zone automatic climate control, better leather, better stereo, etc etc etc.

A Tahoe's turning radius is smaller than an Acura TL's, so clearly size isn't the only factor in maneuverability.

Again, it doesn't bother me what your opinion is, but to some extent you are comparing apples to oranges.

A new Accord V6 will absolutely OBLIDERATE anything even resembling a stock CB7. I have seen times of 15 flat with an 06 EX V6 4-door auto with NAVI and as low as 14.5 for an 06 EX V6 4-door manual with NAVI. STOCK. I have also driven them.

My car is as fast as, if not a little more so, a 98-02 V6 to about 90, when suddenly they wake up and are gone. It is partly gearing, partly powerband, and partly drag. They weren't made to drag race. They also shift into 2nd at less than 5mph unless you floor them.

An '06 Accord just might outrun you in the hills too, although it certainly doesn't have the "buttoned down" maneuverability feeling to it. It does feel heavier by about 400lbs because it is.

A second in the quarter mile is a HUGE amount of time. The faster you go, the more valuable it is.

I agree that cars are definitely safer now...the designs reflect that (high shoulder lines, crazy overhang). I don't feel at all safe in my CB...but since it's maneuverable I can avoid accidents completely rather than be "safer" in one...

Are people really dying less from car accidents because of new designs? I'd love to see some statistics to support that. It seems like the types of accidents people die from (being thrown from the car, rollovers, fires) would kill no matter how great the cars are. I guess injuries are less severe...but still...is it worth it?

I think japanese manufacturers are starting to build most of the cars in the US which might be a factor. I mean big cars are alright but excessively big ex: my dads buick park avenue. IMO is a lil overkill. Its a lot safer i can say that but still i dont see the need for them. But bigger is better in the states. And as stated Newer and somewhat bulkier cars are saving lives nowadays.
