    Computer Tweakers? - look here

    HELP!
In Need Of Windows Tweaking Ideas!

Linux is my OS of choice, but lets talk about MS Windows here. I need some more ideas of things I can do to speed Windows up. I've tweaked it like crazy and its much faster and more stable than most peoples, but I'm a computer tweaker at heart and its still too slooowwww for me. Help me out. Look at the list of stuff I've done and tell me if there's anything else you know of that I can do to speed it up some more. The computer is on a network so that's gonna slow it down some but I think it can still run faster, I just can't think of anything else to do to it. Please help me out. Tell me some stuff that you guys have done to make your shit run faster that's not already on my list.

    The necessary info:
    Windows XP Pro
    Athlon XP 2000+ overclocked to 1.72mhz 266mhz bus 256 L2cache
    1.3GB RAM - DDR-333 2.5latency overclocked 2.7volts 333mhz bus
    Nvidia Gforce4 64MB DDR AGP - overclocked, 1.6volts 66.7mhz bus
    lot of other goodies

Here's a list of stuff I currently have done to my Windows OS. This is by no means a full list, but it gives ya a good idea

    1. All un-necessary services removed from the Services tab under MSCONFIG and from Computer Management Services
    2. Blocked the Messenger port to stop those damn annoying messenger pop-ups and a few other ports commonly used by hackers
    3. Have zero programs that startup with Windows and zero programs running in the background
    4. Made a 500mb Ramdisk partition strictly for the swap file. The info automatically gets erased every re-boot.
    5. Made a 100mb Ramdisk partition strictly for Temp Internet Files, cookies, Windows and installation temp, tmp, and bak files. The info gets saved as an img file upon shutdown and then re-loaded upon re-boot.
    6. Used programs such as Xteq, Winoptimizer, Systemworks, etc. to tweak general Win options.
    7. Disabled all QoS, Help & Support, Error reporting, etc.
    8. Using "Classic" desktop style with all animations, special windows graphics, fonts, un-needed sounds, etc. disabled
    9. Even tho there's over a hundred programs installed, I have a whole whopping 3 icons on tha desktop and no programs reserve memory resources at startup
    10. Quicklaunch bar disabled
    11. Start Menu is modified, organized a way I like, and very streamline....only my commonly used stuff is visible there. I got rid of all the trash and un-needed stuff like help files, weblinks, etc. that most programs install for the hell of it.
    12. Run defrag once a week on all partitions
    13. Clean registry after every install and un-install plus once a week before the defrag.
    14. Deleted all accounts except for Admin.
    15. All service packs and fixes installed - no errors
    16. Optimized monitor and graphics settings
    17. Keep recycle bin empty at all times
    18. Deleted folders that Windows automatically installs that I never use...like My Pictures, My Documents, My Music, etc.
    19. 1 partition (HPFS) specifically for the OS and service packs
    20. 1 partition (HPFS) specifically for Programs/games
    21. 1 partition (NTFS) specifically for Personal files (encrypted)
    22. 1 partition (NTFS) specifically for Entertainment (music/movies/etc.)
    23. Disabled Desktop support and remote desktop (never use it)
    24. Deleated all programs I never use that come with windows (outlook express, accessibility tools and options, internet connection software, certain accessories and admin tools, etc.)
    25. Disabled taskbar clock and windows time
    26. Environment Variables updated to reflect correct paths, path extensions, variables, etc.
    27. Clear all stored commands and reset settings on shut down so that upon re-boot it doesn't have to laod all that crap into memory
    28. and some more stuff but I can't think of it right now

I did have the Logs disabled, but I didn't see a big increase in speed so I re-enabled Logging. Plus, I'd rather have the added ease of revovery from all major activities, services, errors, etc. being recorded...you never know

Besides upgrading physical components of the PC, I ran out of ideas for other stuff to do to it. I do have a nice Athlon XP 2600+ thoroughbred CPU with 512 L2 cache, 333mhz bus speed somewhere, but I can't find it The mo-board will support it too so I'm gonna keep looking for it, but I still need more tweaking ideas for now.

dont know if uve ever used it, but theres an app by AnalogX called MaxMem - runs in the systray and when ur computer is bogging down, it runs thru ur memory and clears any unused data. that really only helps when alot of crap is running, doesnt really increase windows speed.

its just something about windows that the more time that passes after installing, it continues to slow down. thats one hell of a list of stuff uve done, uve done stuff ive never even thought of... idk how much faster ur gonna be able to get it to run

you can also save some harddrive space by completely minimizing system restore...

I'll try the analogX version you mentioned cause I like their products...currently using analogX proxy for my shared internet conn. on all computers in the house. I currently use a program called Memory Defrag which actually defrags RAm, plus another program called FreeRAM XP that just cfrees up mnore memory. Also, eep in mind, I have 1.3gb of RAM and the RAMdisks taking up 600mb of that leaves me with just slightly over 700mb free. Even when I am playing an intense game or program(s) I still have at least 400mb free at all times regaurdless of what I'm doing. Memory shortage is not the issue.

Haven't disabled system restore yet...kinda figured I'd keep it running incase any tweaks I did messed it up. Since I have no conflicts I guess I'll go ahead and disable that as well and see if there's any noticeable difference.

I think my only limitation at this point is processing power. I seem to max out the processor fairly frequently. It's already overcloccked and if I overclock it anymore than the CPU temp and case temp get too hot and I end up losing performance (not to mention taking a chance of fryin the CPU!). I'm using BelarcAdvisor and FreshDiagnose as benchmarking programs, and also monitoring temps, bus speeds, and HD's is SpeedFan. Looks like a processor is next on my list of things to install. ehh.

Any great network benchmark/monitoring/tweaking software besides the usual Norton? The reason I ask is because my network connection is 1gbps but it's pretty much acting like 100mbps. It registers as 1gpbs, but the highest transfer rate I've seen so far is about 78mbps. and that was under an EXTREMELY large amount of info being moved from one computer to another. Even playing network games only hits speeds around 25mbps. That could have some effect on the overall speed of the computer so I want to see if I can squeeze some more out of it. I currently use Ethereal and NetScanTools to monitor all information transfered, services accessed, and for net scan stuff/hacking.

Any other usefull programs or tweaks you guys know of? Everything so far has been usefull. Thanks for tha replies.

I don't think you can achieve 1GBPS unless you have a router/switch that can transmit data that fast.. when you overclock amd processors, sync up the ram with the fsb, you gain no performance if it's "syncd faster" and also if you tell us some ram timings and cpu settings (multiplier & fsb), that would be useful.. if you need any tips, PM me or something
