PC and the term "african american"

Maybe better would be "European American", since Africa is a continent and not a country.

Were humans. Were all different colors but at the root of it all were still humans. If, for example purposes only, you were to reverse the situation with for say mexicans and americans the mexicans even though there darker skinned and speak a differrerent language would be the ones better off and us "caucasions" would be trying to cross the border as well. Stop the labels, were all human and we ought to be different or else earth would be one very boring place. I mean it would be like owing a Civic you would have to try SO hard to be reckognized. Anyways im ramblen

there will always be labels no matter what ethnicity you are and how "civilized" we get...if not by ethnicity then by how much money we make.

ive forever felt the same way ricky... PC bothers me to no end... when i call someone a black person, im really not being derogatory in any way... i only said it because there was a distinction that had to be made... like... if im talking about my friend Chris, someone might say "which one?" and ill say "the black one..." or if necessary, ill say "the white one."

I sat in a lecture once where the guy broke down the whole race/ethnicity classifications and their history and origins and what they mean exactly... and the roots of each term... and their history was highly PREJUDICE... which has since been forgotten about recently, people just think of "Caucasian" and "African american" meaning white and black... but they originally meant more than that... it was a way for white europeans to classify themselves over others, which is utterly retarded...

im going to try to look it up and research it more, it was extremely interesting and would be useful in this discussion.

(i wish i had more to contribute)

90accordSiR is on the right track... like put yourself in the other color's shoes... it could be the same exact thing the other way around, theres nothing that denotes white being better than black, so i dont see where that prejudice originally came from back in the day... weird.

people care too much, its annoying. i care a lot, but what i care about is trying to get other people to NOT care about stupid shit... like skin color... or body type... being someone who grew up in a predominantly black neighborhood (i was one of two white people on a 44 person bus) you learn that really we are all the same...

its often the people who have no exposure to people with other skin colors ("african american", "hispanic" whatever) that are the ones who try to be overly PC... like i went to a school for a semester out in the middle of nowhere, PA (which is where i attended that lecture i mentioned above) and 99/100 of the people were white havent ever had any experience with meeting a black person, and said that they were scared and lock their doors when they pass thru a black neighborhood... but there was ONE black person there who shared their experience, where they met a white person and the white guy tried to rip him off, and the black kid and his family learned to not deal with white people in general, because they are stuck up dicks (thats what they learned all white ppl to be like because of the one experience)... it goes both ways

did i say anything worth anything in all this paragraph?

please nobody get pissed at whats below... im totally againt PC but im personally not being derogatory, so dont take it that way:

accordwarrior and i were talking, he brought up a good point.... the term ******.... why are black people allowed to call each other that, and when a white person does, its discriminatory? when black people use that term, arent they discriminating themselves away from white people?

lots of stuff to think about, and its usually not anything that gets brought up in public often, since its such a touchy subject and people get so worked up about it... where they just need to calm down... i think thats why PC exists cuz there are too many people out there who get worked up about something that didnt mean anything.

thats why i like when ricky brings up touchy subjects, since hes just like me... non caring and not meaning harm in any way, just thinks it needs to be brought up and discussed... then other people get pissed and turn it into a flame war instead of a good discussion...

edit: even more ideas have come up... i could keep going on these topics forever... but ill let it be and let other people talk for a while... i hate politics, i hate debates and arguments, but the one thing im always up for discussing is prejudice and PC because i think its so STUPID

things like this are very touchy and very hard to explain, which is way people tend to avoid these subjects. I dont remember exactly, but I thought I read somewhere that we are all one race and all of our decendents come from the same general area...People are the same regardless of skin color, no one is better than anyone else, and we all have our own strengths and weaknesses. However, we are all raised to believe that there must be a distinction between everything, and that everything must be labeled. We lose sight of what is really deep within every single person: a human being. It boils down to how we are socialized in our society, from our parents, to media, to the community: segregation is all there.

Its like this with every race.

I'm brown and my friend is brown. I'm Mexican and shes Argentinan(sp?) Yet every one calls her Mexican. I think people are just too lazy to figure out what we really are, We are either Spanish/Mexican, White, Black, or Asian/filipino(sp?)

It seems no one cares to figure out if some ones Itialian instead of Spanish or Mexican.

No one cares to figure out if someone's Cambodian instead of Filipino.

No one cares to figure out if someone's Russian instead of White.

No one cares to figure out if someone's African instead of Black

Face it, most humans are LAZY. Me personally, I hate it when people call me spanish...

"Hey, your spanish right? Do you speak Mexican?"

Its just a personal opinion. Thats all it comes down to. If you feel that you are Irish American, Black American, Canadain, whatever. Then that is what you are. If you don't care you don't care. Most people are mute to the subject. So in the end its the same thing with income classes. My family brings in over 200K a year (roughly) and people think just b/c i have a house on the water a boat and jet skis and a car for each person in my family that i am a stuck up little rich kid. But i am the most down to earth person that you could prob. every meet.

                    I am done later

being filipino myself i run into this alot. youd be surprised actually at how badly my parents get treated by alot of vets who still hold grudges towards us for Pearl Harbor!!!
THAT WAS THE JAPANESE, and then it messes everyone up because i was born in Japan, Raised in Japan but im Filipino. there is a strong difference between us, Koreans, Japanese, Thai, and Chinese. however, to the ignorant world we are simply, "Asians". lil dcb7 - i feel ya, NO, i dont want to go eat at a Chinese place, no, i cant make you an egg roll or pulgogi, no i cant fix your Sony VCR and no, i'm not to blame for Kia.
in japan racism doesnt exist, at least not in the extreme way i see here in the US. black people are just that, black folks. same with white folks and us. yellow, brown whatever. but in Japan it doesnt matter, and ACTUALLY, Japanese people are VERY friendly to americans because they want to BE american so bad. they love american culture, which to me is crazy because i think they have it down better than we do. They're more technologically advanced, they're a very smart culture, very respectful, proud of their history and have far better vehicles (as attested to all of us here). i dunno im just rambling, but i find that ignorance is prevalent amongst humans and it stems from a lack of caring about your fellow human being. until then im gonna go pick up my chopsticks and eat my noodles and then sit around and be a little asian. peace.
