So the 17 year Cicada is making it's debut this summer!

    http://slideshow.nbcnews.com/slidesh...cada-51492153/

Not sure how many people on here have dealt with them over the years.

    You can research them online.

Basically there are annual cicada's and periodic ones.

Every summer when you hear that loud ass buzzing, that's the annual ones.

Every 13 or 17 years, a brood emerges by the billions(not a typo) and swarm from basically the low country(GA, SC) all the way up into the hudson valley.

    Pretty far stretch.

They are harmless. As newbs they suckle on tree roots for 17 years, then emerge. They land on the closest object(usually trees) but can be people or cats lol....

they then break out of their skin, and emerge the cicada's we're use to seeing.

They then fuck, lay eggs, and die.

The eggs hatch, and the newbs fall to the ground and burrow and suck on some root for another 17 years.

    FUCKING CRAZY. lol.

I've had people tell me that they were hanging around in 04 when the last brood emerged, and that the swarm was like defeaning. And then all of a sudden over 100k of these started falling out of the sky lol.

    IDK.

Now that I own a house im the one who has to do the yard work, and Im not a big fan of these.

Anything that leaves behind a perfect mold of itself, is fucking disgusting imo.

They don't sting or anything, but having one fly into your head is not my type of enjoyment.

    Thoughts?

btw if you're out on the highway and drive through the mass of these flying, be careful, because people have had their cars overheat from them jamming up the front end.

I read a story of a dude in a pickup who heard a loud buzzing.

He pulled over and couldn't figure it out.

So he kept driving and then he ran into a dark cloud of them.

He drove through them for 4 miles or so and they were so vicious to his windsheild that he ran out of washer fluid because they leave behind a yellow juice on the window.

I guess when he pulled over into a gas station, the attendant was like "holy shit dude" and when he got out and looked he could barely recognize his front end lol.

    So nutty.

In other regions there are 13-year and 15-year cicadas as well. It's kind of odd how nature works like that.

i ran into a swarm of these driving through wyoming. it was so bad i had to pull over. i could not see and the guts were so thick my wipers would not move at all. i remember the grill of the cb was just packed full of them and my headlights were no longer able to put out light because of the guts.

i had to call AAA to come tow my ass to a carwash. that tow truck driver was laughing his ass off when he saw my nevada plates. welcome to the midwest he said.

The event that is going to happen this year is different than anything most of you are thinking.

Shit will be biblical. I was old enough to remember this happening last time, 17 years ago. Shit was crazy. Like I said, basically biblical.

And its specific to the east coast. Atleast the billions of these things that the news is all about. They exist all over the place and have different cycles of life. These ones in particular, 17 years and will be crawling out of the ground by the billions.

Ralphie, put a cover on your A/C unit or rig up something with wire screen/mesh or something so they don't cost you a small fortune. Once the ground hits 64 degrees, the shit is going to go crazy out there.

Back in the 80's they seemed to be around all the time, but anyway.

We would catch them. Tie string to a safety pin, then stick that pin through the back of the insect. And have a flying pet on a string. This was before video games...

Well there are a few theories, one of which, is that the cycle throws off their sole predator the cicada killer.

Thought the Cicada's were bad, the fucking wasps sting them and paralyze them. Then they drag them to the wasps underground burrow, where they lay their eggs on the cicada. When the eggs hatch, they feed on the cicada while it's still alive but immobile. Creepy.

You think they will effect my outside unit?

I didn't even think of that. Ill have to look online and see what advice there is.

Im hoping in my area it isn't so bad, but we have a fuck ton of trees so im assuming it'll be as bad as anywhere else.

Supposedly its worse where the tree's are older.

                  Epecially oaks.

Na id prefer these on that list-

The males do not sting, but the females do, and it's supposedly a pretty nasty sting.

                    Different species of similar bug.

Just like there are chocolate labs and yellow labs. Different species. Thats what I meant when I said what is going to happen this year is different than what most people are thinking of.

The shit that is about to happen is on a biblical level of event.

                    Unless you remember seeing them in numbers like this;

You are thinking of a different species. These ones are specific to the east coast, and come by the billions. It'll be a 4-6 week event of crazy amounts of bugs.

You're thinking of the annual cicada's.

                      They are around every year.

                      They are green right?

Also called dog day cicada's or annual fly.

                      These are completely different.

Same species but cousins if you will.

And there are 100,000x more of them.

In enough numbers, they actually harm full size trees.
By suckling on them and then slicing open their branches to lay eggs, a lot of them on one branch can actually kill that branch so in the end tree's are like shaved over lol.

Its good and bad. Natural pruning, but can also infect trees.

Honestly, I like to think of myself is a pretty solid man.

I kill bugs in my house whenever and shit.

                          Ive served in the military.

                          I eat steak rare.

                          What the fuck ever.

If shit hits the fan by my house like above, im staying inside as much as humany possible.

I really dislike these things and they really creep me out.

                          Call me a bitch, idc.

I too, consider myself pretty manly and these things are fucking creepy. I hate how they just land on you and die. WTF is the deal?

If they don't just die, they are like a 1/2 oz object that holds onto your clothes and requires force to remove. You cannot just brush these things off. Step on one, guts spew out the sides of your shoes and shit.

These things are nasty as FUCK and I would avoid them at all costs. Especially during this crisis level event.
