You guys ever consider starting over with your CB?

So, I am considering starting over with my CB.

I refuse to pay the money it will cost to get the rust handled($2500-$3000), so I would be generally happy with the car. I have done a ton of work to it but it seems like I'm still left with this POS feeling about the car because of the rust.

The rust is extensive, through the fender/tire well into the trunk. Not going to pay for that repair. Its just not worth it to me. There are other things I would like differently about my car as well, so, Im thinking about starting over. I guess basically I enjoy the CB, and now I am feeling like its time to start over and be more serious about it this time. I originally bought it to be both cheap and fun, so rust/color/trim wasn't much of a concern when I bought it. To be quite honest after seeing so many clean/rust free and gorgeous cars on here, I am jealous/intersted in having one myself. Sort of. Ashamed of mine as well. My car looks like a dinosaur took a bite out of the rear panel. Lol. All the work I have put into it, I want to be proud of it. I just, well, am not. Sitting next to my gorgeous DSM's and my original owner cd5, it looks like a pile. Lol.

I've also been itching to start on another car for me. My son has a civic hatch I have been helping him with, and, well, you know. I want to do another car now. His civic is very clean. Honestly it is sort of inspiring to see his motivation. He works on his car almost daily now. I love it. Its actually become a topic of debate recently about how his Honda is cleaner than either of mine. And, he is right. Lol. I really want a clean CB, not just a rusted out turbo charged beater. Feeling like this has lead me to think that starting over is the best option.

Whats your guys opinion on this? I've been searching around for rust free markets, and I am leaning towards Oklahoma City because its about 8 hours from me and the CB's are generally pretty clean.

The time spent on the road, cost of new car, inspection, blah blah blah. I just don't know if THAT is the answer either. I have a few things I would really like to find in the CB, and so Im stumped.

I cannot drive back and fourth over and over to look various cars and not buy, its like 16 hours round trip. NOTHING in Omaha/Midwest is 15 years old and also rust free. Its just not happening.

So, anyways what do you guys think?

    For the interest of the conversation I'll add what Im holding out for;

    -5 spd ex coupe
    -black dash/tan interior
    -No rust

And thats about it. I don't really think Im being THAT picky. However, I have been flirting with the idea of buying another CB for 8-10 months and have yet to find anything I would be happy with.

Did any of you guys go through this too? If I decide to pull the trigger I'll pull my engine/turbo system and re-convert back to stock and sell. Thats a lot of stupid work too. Not sure how I feel about that, knowing I'll get rusted out prices for the car and I've completely rebuilt the suspension/steering/brake system and exhaust. Probably dropped $1,500-$2,000 on parts/tires and exhaust that would all be sold with the rusted out POS. Most i'd get for the car is $1000-$1500. Better than a poke in the eye, but all things to be considered.

    Give me some feeback guys

Yep. If money was no option I'd get a black coupe, no rust. My cb7 is a project car now and I have about $2000 of rust to fix as well. My rear jack points are non-existent and I have rust in the engine bay corners.

But the way I see it you'll always have something to fix that takes a large sum of money. I guess having a rust-free shell is a big bonus If you have the money and you can find the shell, then why not buy it. Pretty easy decision.
I haven't taken this path personally, so I can't comment from personal experience. But if I could, I would

nope not at all, not even if I never started my RB project, because the body is flawless, the car doesn't have a spec of rust on it...well it didn't before I cut into it lol

Only read the first half before I wanted to tell you this:
It's a project car-ish, yes? Why not try your hand at rust repair?
I did. It turned out ok. If you still want another car afterwards then get one, but you'll have rust repair experience under your belt.
I've had the mindset that this is a learning car for a few years. Granted, it's my DD, so I can't get too into any project. But still, learning car. It's 20 years old.
Besides the body rust (very slight) the frame is fine, and everything else works wonderfully. I plan to keep it till I can do the rest of the rust repair.

Second bit of advice: Make sure you take your parts off. I'm sure you listed that in the bit I skipped, but I wanted to make sure someone said it.

If I were to seek another CB project, I'd consider importing one from overseas. RHD alone would make it really cool. Not for a primary daily driver, though.

My wife is thinking I should do something like what you suggested. Repair it myself. I've never painted an entire car in my shop. Done panels, done repairs, paint lots of parts- never a whole car.

I can weld, I can cut. I don't know, I've thought about trying my hand at it but am sceptical because the extent of the damage in my eyes would be difficult for a PRO to fix. There is a coffee can sized hole going from the fender well to the trunk. And its right on the load bearring corner where the verticle of the trunk meets the horizontal. Seems pretty elaborate to fix.

My wife thinks I should spend the money I would spend on a new CB on taking some classes. I'm up for some continued education on one of my ASE certifications anyways, so, I don't know.

Thats why I made the thread, trying to get some feedback. Thanks for the input.

I never really thought of that.

Can they deliver that straight to my door? I don't know anything about importing cars these days. I wonder what the cost is for something like that?

Im not ballin ass rich, but I could drop some coin w/out really sweating it. How would you go about looking into this? When I lived on the west coast it was common talk for people to "know someone" that could get it done, but out here in the midwest thats "ricer" talk to anyone I know. I suppose I could ask around when I'm in Cali next.

Who knows. It drives me banana's that in Cali almost every car is rust free and gorgeous, but out here cars look like a car battery exploded on the paint and then someone tried to clean it up with a wire brush. Paint here is just terrible on anything that is older. It should be a crime for the city to ruine our property like this.

The salt + the pot holes and they should have to pick up the tab occasionally for repairs.

              Seriously. Assholes.

To my mind- it makes more sense to build something that is starting out structurally sound.

If importing from the land of JDM is too expensive- I can send you links to some cherry Fl cars...
I am currently trying to persuade HappyGilmore to get rid of his FOUR rusty buckets and consolidate his mods into a rust free Fl cb.

I can understand wanting to do the restoration work yourself-to gain experience- but what you are talking about undertaking might end up causing frustration on a level, where purchasing/importing would have made more sense.

My BF shipped a EF hatch from Ca to Fl for about 900- so I would imagine 5-600 to ship one to your door.

I know all about it that's for sure. I am stuck at the point in my life right now too. I need to rid 3 of my 4 CB's as it is (and get another rust free here in FL). I think trying your hand at the rust repair is the way to go. I am thinking that's what I am going to do with my white coupe. I guess it would be quite a learning curve but it would be worth the time.

You'd likely have to go through a Registered Importer, but it can be done easily enough. The Japanese CB Accords are similar enough to the US models that the DOT and EPA will allow them with minimal, if any, modification. It can still be a hassle, and certainly more expensive than a USDM CB... but it'd be a full JDM or EDM car (or whatever market you import from). A good thing about that is that it'll be attractive to future buyers, either as a whole or in parts, if you decide to get rid of it. I met a guy at AFM this year that imported cars (he was the previous owner of NightWolf's RHD 5th gen wagon.) If you're interested, I can point you in his direction. I don't believe he does it anymore, but I'm sure he'd know who to contact. He's out of California.

I would take any one of these.

Damn. Florida is sooo far for a drive though. I wonder if I couldn't pay a shipping company to pick the car up for me and transport it.

Shit, for that matter I wonder if I could buy while out in Cali in person on business, and then pay a shipping company to bring it to me in Omaha.

Whats your guys' thoughts on that? Without it being registered/titled in my name, would they move it for me?

Anyone with experience on that? I'd shell out the coin for transport if that was an option. I hadn't even thought of that.

My biggest hold up is the drive. I am not crazy about a cross country tour in a CB that I have yet to turn a wrench on. My truck eats gas, but I could take the truck/trailer and bring it myself. That'd be driving both ways though. This is what had me thinking OKC was a good idea. I'll do 8 hours each way, much more than that and I'll pass.

Thanks a lot for the input everyone, I appreciate whatever ideas or suggestions anyone has.

I didn't weld mine, I was too concerned about a large impact. I cut out the rust and used fiberglass.
                              After that, Bondoglass, then Bondo.
Lots of sanding. Primered it, then painted it. My blending looks like shit. I did it with a spray paint can, so no complaints.
Almost 2 years and no real rust. I still haven't put clear coat on it either.
