how many people even celebrate kwanzaa? I always hear that thrown into the mix for some reason. Isn't that just an African holiday?

Kwanzaa is an African American holiday, meant to celebrate heritage.
I'd have greater respect for the fairly recently created holiday if it wasn't tucked neatly between Christmas and New Years. It really doesn't belong with Hanukkah and Christmas, IMO. Most people don't take it seriously, because it's viewed as "that other winter 'holiday'"
