Does anyone regularly sleep on a Futon/Sofa Bed?

Im looking into buying a Futon/Sofa Bed for my room because I like my space and I dont want my bed being the focus/taking up all the space in my room.

Who has used a Futon/Sofa Bed as their primary sleeping place? What kind did you use?

I had a Serta matress but i gave that to my sister because I just plum didn't have any room in my room.

I just have some 99 dollar one from Walmart. For a single person it's great. you put it down when you sleep or you could leave it up in a sofa position. The only problem with it is because i weight 220 pounds, the padding wears out fast so you have a metal bar from the frame right where you hip would be. My brother has the same futon so he bought some more stuffing for those bean bag chairs and filled his cushions with it. That solved his problem. Since i weigh more than him, i'm thinking of using that stuffing plus some kind of memory foam padding.

      1. It sucks. Not very comfortable for regular sleeping. But better than the floor. A futon mattress is pretty much an over sized sofa cushion

      2. Don't buy a cheap metal one. They fall apart so fast. My ex had and it was scrap metal in under a year. I replaced the broken rivets with bolts and welded the frame joints together. Still fell apart.

nothings as comfy as a real mattress+boxspring (on the floor or cheap frame). depending on setup (small room?) find a way to use a mattress(bed) as a couch (did that recently, in college), maybe by keeping extra pillows onhand to put against the wall. sofa beds/pullouts SUCK do not consider it for continual use. a futon is alright, and the convertability is nice, but dont expect awesome comfort.

anyway i used a futon for a while, mainly in HS. i learned:

do not get a metal frame. it will curve/bend slowly over time causing a sinkhole in the center. fully wooden is best. getting a quality used frame (w.out pad) is an option, just inspect where the hinges join to the wood to make sure the wood isnt splitting.

get the 9"-thick pad, not the regular 6" one. youll be glad you did.

and dont just get a fitted sheet for the top, but id recommend a full-zipper fabric cover for the entire pad. reqularly wash the sheet, but once in a while youll be glad you can remove the entire covering and wash the whole thing, instead of trying to bring the entire pad to the laundromat.

lastly, seasonally rotate the pad, like you would a mattress.

When I moved into the place I'm in now, I slept on a futon for a year and a half. It fucking blows. It's hard, unsupportive and just not comfortable unless you're only going to sleep on it once in a while.

I found myself never getting a good night's sleep, always sore and was just about as bad as sleeping on a park bench. It was one of the metal frame ones with a 6" mattress and folds into a couch. We now use it as our crash pad in the basement for drunk friends who stay over.

I finally bought a Kingsdown medium support double mattress and foundation for like $600. What a difference.

If it's something you're going to sleep on every night for long term, invest in a bed. Plus, girls don't like to smush on futons, unless they're drunk or from Jersey Shore.

X27897504 on getting a real mattress. I've got a pillowtop spring mattress with a 3" memory foam pad on top, and man its comfortable. Combined with the $20 memory foam pillow, I sleep like a rock and wake up pain free. SO worth the $ since I have upper back/neck issues due to a past whiplash injury.

X2 on the wooden frame because of the metal frames issues mentioned above

I'm a deep sleeper, and when I lived at home, had a very comfortable bed that I slept very well on.

After going and sleeping on a futon, I was shocked at how poorly I was sleeping and how restless I was throughout the night, and waking up fatigued.

With the new bed, I sleep like a rock and the house could literally burn down around me and I'd probably sleep through it.

I hate those futons, too hard and cheap. Ive slept on a couch for most of my life and for the last 3 years Ive been sleeping on a bed thats on milk crates. lol

it was alright for the most part. although, i prefer the ground. but i prefer sleeping on the floor than any mattress (was raised that way...poor household). the metals ones bothered me a lot though. the bars that hold the mattress were awkwardly aligned so they would hurt. not to mention the bend on the actual mattress gets soft and you can feel EVERYTHING under it.

i'd get a bunk bed, take out the underside to put like a desk or something and just sleep up top
                  for example

get something from ikea they are great. i had the full sized one and it was great. the pad was thick and although the frame was metal the slats were curved wood so they had some springiness but weren't too bouncy.

from what i have heard, the key is to get one without bars because you will feel them eventually. my plan was to buy a cheap wooden frame from walmart/kmart and then buying a quality matress somewhere.

my oly problem is that id like a queen sized one, and im not sure where i could find a quaity 'futon' matress

Overstock.com listed several microsuede or fiber queen sized futon mattreses.

if you have money to blow and aren't renting. I'd look into foldaway storage bed.
theres all sorts of trippy designs that come out of the walls from below desks
                            an actual bed.

work at a furniture store. I barely can get to sleep on a regualar bed.
what your looking at is only made for guests staying a nite or two.
ewven sofa's with inner sprung matresses aren't good for long term use.

i had the bunkbed combo and it wasnt to bad at first but like everyone said it started sag and the pad eventually did not provide comfort. It was metal as well. But one thing that i havent seen pointed out about the metal ones is that after time they start to creek and make noise when you roll around. Not fun when your enjoying company and trying to be descreet about it. and if your a light sleeper it could wake you up. But i did have restless nights when sleeping on my futon bed combo. i ended up sleeping on the top bunk because it was more comfy.
