GIMP works for me, but I don't do photo editing for a living or anything. Photoshop has more features and a bit easier to work with IMO once you know your way around it.
I use Lightroom for 95% of the photos I edit. It has robust editing features that can be applied to multiple images at once, which saves hours of editing time, and it is great for cataloging photos if you want to be able to find something easily. I use Photoshop only on images that need more editing than Lightroom provides, only about 5%
